Angry Boys - smash or trash? Have your say

Angry Boys - smash or trash? Have your say

Let’s put it in terms that Chris Lilley and his cornucopia of cringe-inducing characters might recognise: Angry Boys (ABC1, 9pm Wednesday) has been s---.

As I type those decency-protecting dashes I know the assessment seems harsh, not to mention provocative, because Lilley is regarded as the nearest thing Australian TV has to a comedy genius after We Can Be Heroes and Summer Heights High.

But Angry Boys has been a major disappointment.

Unlike most viewers (ratings indicate the audience has halved), I have persevered – more out of respect for Lilley’s previous work than any entertainment value.

Unfortunately, the show hasn’t made me laugh since the start, when Daniel Sims explained “mainies” (driving up and down Dunt’s main street in his mum’s Pulsar) and S.Mouse did his Slap My Elbow music video.

Every week since then: crickets.

Hardcore Lilley fans defend the show as uncompromising satire. Uncompromising is right: did nobody at the ABC or on the set have the guts to tell writer-producer-star Lilley his material wasn’t getting any laughs?

And I wouldn’t call it satire. It’s empty, unsympathetic parody: of bogans; of black bubblegum rappers; of surfers with saltwater for brains; of bullying Asian stage-mothers.

These unlovable characters have been one-joke comedy sketches stretched over 12 tedious weeks.

The Sims boys: flip the bird, say “d---head”, rinse, repeat. S.Mouse: say “motherf---er”, strike a gangsta pose, rinse, repeat. Jen Okazaki: swap Rs and Ls and abuse “plobrem” son Tim, rinse, repeat.

I get it that Angry Boys is intentionally discomforting. But I mostly feel discomfort for Lilley that the ABC didn’t tell him we were expecting comedy.

Lilley is to be admired for having a crack at something edgy. But we’re still waiting for the point of the profanity and puerility to be revealed.

We’re waiting for something, anything, approximating that lump in the throat when we snuck a glimpse of the frightened kid behind obnoxious Jonah’s bravado on Summer Heights High.

Instead, Angry Boys has given us a dead guinea pig called Kerrie-Anne. And it stinks.

As Craig Ferguson would say on The Late Late Show, I look forward to your angry letters, Angry Boys fans.

Life is too short to waste it on watching boring filthy foul mouthed actors on tv. I hope we never see Mr Lilley on tv again as he was just a 5 minute wonder.

BennoB, I for one would hope we DO see Chris Lilley on the telly again.

But hopefully in a comedy. And hopefully a comedy that doesn't rely quite so heavily on swear words - like his first two shows.

Love it. Love it how it also pisses people off. tired of the crap that FTA puts up, master chef hosted by 3 ponces, so you think you can be a d---, dancing with the c grade personalites, morning shows for 3yr olds numpties who think waking up with Today is not 1 big commercial, all the lowest mind numbing crap I have ever witnessesed. These shows suit the dullards in society who cant think for themselves. Thanks Chris Lilley, love you.

Well said, Sam, and very passionately argued.

I love it that the people who love it, such as your fine self, let rip at the people it p's off!

And with such spectacular indignation - gotta love that.

But you might be surprised to find that viewers disappointed by Angry Boys also share your views about the mind-numbing, lowest common denominator nonsense elsewhere on the FTA main channels.

And another thing: while I can accept your digs at grandpa-dancing Manu and cereal killer Karl are you really and truly saying that Matt Preston is a ponce?

What the?

was just a bad attempt to cash in on some of the more popular characters from his previous shows..... another one hit wonder

James, I appreciate everyone has an opinion and we live in a nation of free speech but do you consider this article news worthy. I do not watch this show and as a result i decide to watch something else. My point being we seem to have these discussions about tv violence or tv sex or violent video games on a regular basis. Do we need more of it ? Is there anything else news worthy? Here are two suggestions; one, create and produce your own sitcom/show. Two, dont watch the show. Move on.

JK, I agree wholeheartedly that switching over and/or off is the very best way to have your say.

And, yes, after 11 weeks I have definitely moved on. As have most of the audience.

As to your concern that this subject is not "news worthy", this is an opinion forum after all.

But it should be noted that you and I both helped pay for Angry Boys, which comes to us by courtesy of our taxpayer funded ABC.

Has it delivered what was promised and is it worth the hard-earned tax dollars used to help create it?

Ratings show the audience has halved and the general public reaction to the show's relentless and ultimately meaningless profanity suggests to me that Angry Boys has missed the mark.

Who at the ABC was making sure taxpayers got value for their money?

trash.

Never have liked anything done by that bloke.

I'm not a prude either, i love comedy.

But, hell, we can hear and see this kind of thing from our own kids, don't need to see this rubbish on the tv too.

It's not new and it certainly isn't funny.

Old? OLD! How very dare you! Almost made me spill my cup of Horlicks reading your comment just now, Jessica.

Tsk. The young people of today! Sigh...

But, I confess, you may be right Jessica. Maybe I did lose my sense of humour ..... watching Angry Boys.

Totally agree. It's crap.

Why does the ABC insist upon running such rubbish loaded with swearing and other unfunny stuff.

Good comedy does not need swearing as supposidly intelligent people do not need to swear, they can articulate themselves in the english language and really shine.

How can we expect kids to stop swearing and learn proper english when the TV stations show people swearing all the time and it becomes acceptable as normal speech.
