 A slur on the church

A slur on the church

In the light of news reports this week by Herald reporter Joanne McCarthy I examine in my column today some of Bishop Michael Malone's statements about the Newcastle-Maitland Catholic diocese response to priestly pedophilia. Joanne's reports are based on documents that lift a heavy veil on dealings by Bishop Malone and his predecessor, Bishop Leo Clarke, with a priest who was then the subject of serious allegations of sexual assault of children. The priest was Denis McAlinden, who died in 2005 and who was, the church has admitted, a serial sexual predator of children over many years.

The documents referred to by Joanne show that Bishop Clarke then Bishop Malone tried to have McAlinden defrocked after two allegations were made at the same time in 1995 that Vince Ryan, another of the diocese's serial pedophiles, was charged by police. Bishop Clarke had assured McAlinden that the confidentiality of the defrocking process would protect "your good name". Until then Bishop Clarke had been urging McAlinden, who was known to be a pedophile and who had moved to The Philippines, to live as a retired priest in "a climate that would be acceptable".

When he succeeded Bishop Clarke days after the charging of Ryan, Bishop Malone continued Clarke's attempt to have McAlinden defrocked and, as Bishop Clarke had done, in urging McAlinden's co-operation warned of the possibility of police intervention. That was in 1995. It was another 10 years before the diocese contacted police about McAlinden, who was still a priest and who died a month later.

In 2001 I challenged Bishop Malone to tell the people of the Hunter Region what he had done about the freedom of Vince Ryan to prey on boys, 26 of them, in the diocese, and Bishop Malone had this, among other things, to say in response: "For Mr Corbett to accuse Church authorities of covering up this case is both incorrect and a slur on the integrity of those authorities."

Is there hope for the Catholic and other churches? What is it?

One of the secrets of Fatima was that "Rome would lose the faith and become the seat of the antichrist". Judging by the evil and abhorrent behaviour of the catholic church in these matters I'd say its a done deal. In the meantime, criminal charges and jail for those covering up these vile acts as well as excommunication from their beloved church should be a start. Edward Burke once said that "all it takes for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing".

Amazing and horrifying the obstructing steps of senior Catholic clergy, as the Herald reports. In the mid 90's Bishop Malone officiated at a confirmation ceremoney in Kurri Kurri. One of his first duties as bishop he said. I was the photographer. He spoke of the lovely children, then his attitude changed he grew red faced and thundered something like, " There are people out there accusing our church etc. I say to them, Put up or Shut up." Then pausing he took control of himself and went on about the lovely children. An inquiry is long overdue.

I can't believe that in the modern world men still get around in dresses, dedicating their lives to the sky fairy, pretending that 'God' is responsible for all thats good in the world, but has no part to play in anything bad! Honestly!! If I walked around the streets, claiming that an invisible man talked to me and told me what to do, that he had a son that revived himself after death, who could turn water into wine and walk across a lake, then I would be (rightly) put in a straight-jacket and sent to a padded room!! Call it 'religion' and this sort sort of kindergarten nonsense gives you some authority and need for 'respect'. If the influence of the church on the world wasn't so evil in itself then the whole thing would be hilarious! I am sure that in generations to come, the church will take its rightful place along ideas that we now find laughable (whats that you Christians say, the world is flat ... ha ha ha ha - you backward bunch of ninnies!)

Seriously, the only people more culpable than these pervert priests are the idiot parents who allowed their children to be unsupervised around some pervert priest. When are they going to be dragged into court? And what's with these people reporting kiddy-fiddling priests to the CHURCH???? Isn't that like reporting a burglary to a smack addict? These clowns run a church that is backward drek, doomed to darkness everlasting.

Morning Jeff, I am hoping (praying!!!) that churches of all denominations may one day be spoken of in history books as an unfortunate phase in history which caused more misery than any other plague ever has, I am trying to think of something positive that religion has done but I can not, good is done by people knowing what is right from wrong & that has nothing to do with the church. A good use for churches would be to turn them into housing for the poor ! While in Newcastle yesterday two elderly gentlemen were spruking on about Jesus, not one person stopped to listen, in fact most people laughed at them ,hopefully this is a sign that people are waking up to the fraud of religion that has been perpetuated with fear & undercover cloak & dagger tactics for far too long.We had to move to a more peaceful spot to enjoy the passing crowd , which seems to be increasing I am pleased to see.

Jeff it appears nothing much has changed since Bishop Malone directed these outrageous and sanctimonious claims at you in 2001. They are still playing "hide and seek" about their knowledge and actions, but thanks to Joanne's "seek", the "hide" bit is becoming more difficult. I suspect there is unfortunately yet more to come, and every additional revelation does more damage to the church which bemoans falling attendances. And they will continue to fall until the church realises enough is enough, and reveals all it's "dirt linen". Then and only then, can it get back to the task of rebuilding it's ever increasing severely damaged reputation.

For Mr Corbett to accuse Flying Spaghetti Monster authorities of covering up this case is both incorrect and a slur on the integrity of those authorities.
