Are you a bigger loser than Corbett?

Are you a bigger loser than Corbett?

It's our very own Biggest Loser contest, yours and mine, and we're kicking off the kilograms from this Sunday, August 1. At 4 o'clock that afternoon I'll be weighing in with a few cycling mates who've become bulbous over a wet, dark and cold winter, and we will all, you included, be weighing out 10 weeks hence, on Sunday October 10. He or she who has lost the highest percentage of weight wins! Your prize will be the esteem of a slimmer bod, and everyone's a winner. And winners, one of my mates likes to say, are grinners.

In my column in The Herald today I canvass my flirtations with various diets, and I've arrived at the conclusion that the best way to diet is to eat less! And, in my case, to drink less, because I am partial to a few beers.

So there's my tactic - instead of the grapefruit, protein, no-carbs-after-2, tomato or Pritikin diets, I'm going for the eat-drink-less diet, and I'm aiming to lose one kilo a week for a total of 10 kilos to take me to 83kg or so. Hey, I'll be flying on the bike! Well, not flying but certainly going faster than I am now. Of course there's more to it than cycling - I love the sensation of lightness that comes with losing even just a few kilos. Moving seems so much easier.

I'm hoping you'll join me for the 10 weeks. Maybe you'll be comfortable with half a kilogram a week, which is for most people a very noticeable loss of five kilos at October 10. Tell us today how much you want to lose, how you're going to do it, and give us an update from time to time of your progress. And if you have any secret weight-loss tips, they'll be safe with us on the blog. C'mon, there's no reason why you can't join us.

I'm with you Jeff. After dropping 23kgs in the last 18months, I gained a minor knee injury in March and 8 kg went back again quickly, now 108kg. I started about a week ago...will see how we go, targetting under 100kg, preferably 98kg within 8 weeks.

Good on you Dave! Stretch it to 10 weeks and make it 10kg. Don you have a particular diet?

Been thinking about it for a while so OK, I'm in. The simplest weight loss tip is the only one that really works. "Energy in / energy out". If you expend more energy than you take in, you lose weight. Easy. I'm 114.7kg spread over a 187cm frame, actually it's not spread over, it all tends to congregate in the middle. I was 80kg when I used to ride 200km a week on the bike but after getting knocked off by a car a couple of times I gave up riding and ballooned into a big fatty.

I think we continue to consume the same energy when, for whatever reason, we stop exercising, Steve. That's what's happened to me this winter - I've stayed in bed too often but I eat the same amounts. Are you, Steve, simply going to eat less, or are you counting calories? And exercise?

you fat bastard.... how's that for motivational speaking? its still too cold to be losing my winter blubber protective layer just yet.

Thanks Jud, that did help. Problem is if you wait to long you'll miss the chance to show off your beach bod.

An ounce of prevention.......?

At 75kg & 183cm, I won't be joining your challenge, Jeff! Just lay off the McHappy meals and you'll be as sound as a pound.

Geez Scott, it's a wonder you can hold a pistol up long enough to sight it!

Coincidentally, I have 1st August also pencilled in the calender for the starting day - and I'm running half marathon on that day. Despite all the training - long runs, cycling etc I've packed on @5kg which is just not fair! I plan to lose 10kg by January through the trusted method of a combination of portion control (size of the meal), writing down everything you eat - you can allow for 3 snacks on top of meals if you look closely at fat content and keeping beer to a minimum (weekends maybe?) - plus physical activity which is best done in the morning. I'd like to keep running but the extra weight keeps me to a shuffle.

Well Jeff, I'll give it a go..... anything for motivation. I will aim for the 10 kilos in 10 weeks. I believe in healthy eating and more energy going out than going in is the best way to burn up the fat. I have three friends on weight watchers at the moment, and it has worked wonders for them. I've been losing weight (very slowly) by going to the gym and making sure I eat in a healthy manner...... However whenever the little fella gets a cold that's one week off the gym and then I always get it too, so that's another week. So far this year we have had 4 colds!! I'm thinking of trying out weight watchers, purely for the recipes really. I will be aiming for more big walks on the weekends, in Glenrock or the Watagans. There are parts of the great north walk that are very challenging. And Scott I never eat Mcdonalds, KFC and the like -gawd it tastes awful, and the texture of the food is ick.

That's great Leah! What weight, then, is your target for October 10?
Posted by Jeff Corbett on 28/07/2010 11:06:18 AM
Hey, my tip is find one thing that you eat or drink everyday that is not good for you and stop consuming it. ie: coke, cappo, cake etc. Hey what about that fat liberal they sacked in sydney for havin a crack at the muslims, i reckon the libs were scared that he might stop kissin babies on the electrol trail, and start eatin them!
Posted by deathwarmedup, 28/07/2010 10:55:25 AM, on The Herald
When I saw a photograph of him I was astounded that he had been permitted to stand for the Libs. I like your idea of giving up one thing, and in my case that would be beer. I have a friend who puts his obesity down to flavoured milk, at one stage up to 16 litres a day! I'd have thought flavoured milk would be very easy to give up.

Directeur Sportif congratulations on your second blog anniversary tomorrow many good contributions from cycling to whales to haematomas to ginger and cancer. Any highlights? Are you missing Buell? The blog is an interesting beast as Jeff says and the next two years will be interesting too as Jeff passes sixty and perhaps the 100kg barrier as well if the beer and less food diet does not go well.

Welcome aboard C&O. How much do you hope to lose and which particular chaff and oats are you cutting back on?
