 Caged hens

Caged hens

The managing director of The Australian Egg Corporation, James Kellaway, has appeared twice in The Herald in the past fortnight trying to explain away the cruelty that is battery hen farming. But in neither the long article nor the shorter letter did Mr Kellaway tell us that caged egg farming is not cruel. Yesterday I asked him, and in my column in The Herald today I give an account of his logic that leads to the claim that caging a hen on a minimum of 550 square centimetres promotes their health and wellbeing over free range! That 550 square centimetres is quite a bit less than an A4 page, and less still since the space under the egg baffle, manure deflector and water trough is included in the 550 square centimetres.

I suppose an alternative view will always snare some support. Has Mr Kellaway's snared yours?

my workstation is not much larger - in proportion. Only difference is that I am allowed up once in a while? Maybe Mr kellaway might have to be confined that way for a while? What a job he has -to sell sheet substituted for sandwiches? Actually given the confines of what he is allowed to think -he is already cruelly handicapped. Lets campaign for his mental release first? Or has he been confined for too long to know the real difference?

This is a cruel industry and bringing presure on big food outlets does make a difference. The price difference between free range eggs and caged eggs is about half a cup of coffee out. I could rant for ages on this subject but we all know the truth about the hens treatment. Sincere thanks Jeff for keeping this debate in the media, it keeps big business looking over their shoulder which is fine by me.

It amazes me that we still have to have this discussion. It's pretty clear that caging hens in this manner is cruel. It isn't necessary, so why is it still allowed?

Where is the RSPCA in this? Their silence is deafening. Other groups have tried to highlight this trade in cruelty but the RSPCA management seem very reluctent to take appropriate action. One wonders why. Vested lobby group donations perhaps.

To Leahkf, probably the same as the oil & its cosy governments, m.o.n.e.y.! And no caged egg farming should NOT be allowed under any circumstances. To Kellaway, if you believe that cutting beaks of hens, living in a confined space is not cruel, then I ask you to cut a bit of your lip, then live in a proportionly sized cage similar to what the hens do, and then say if it is not cruel or not. James Kellaway, how can you say that this sought of living is better than free range hens? Promotes a hens health over free range?! YEAH RIGHT (rolls eyes, rolls eyes)

I purchase caged eggs because I cannot afford free range. Why should I be forced to pay more? I believe the movement towards free this, organic that is to deny the role that technology plays in our quest to feed the starving millions on this planet and the billions more expected over the next 30 years! How are we to feed those that are less fortunate than us? The views proposed by some represent in my mind a disease of affluence... Please leave me to choose the eggs I wish as unlike you, I cannot afford such luxuries as free this and organic that!

I see by your email address, Jim, that you are from the Australian Egg Corporation. You wouldn't be James Kellaway by any chance, would you? I am sure you can afford free-range eggs.

Anything that needs a ... "manure deflector"(?!) ... oh COME ON! Why has the caging of hens not been banned YEARS ago? For Mr Kellaway to say: 'it is for the consumer to decide" - he is correct - if YOU PEOPLE stop buying cage eggs THEY (should) stop making them. However, most people are not interested in the suffering of other living creatures so we can't rely on the consuming public then it must be up to Parliament to make rules. Geez - if we could have slaves it is probable people would use them. Don't rely on the "better nature" of humans! And don't even look to "religion" - the Pope decreed animals don't have souls (*yawn*) so they don't "count". Souls, tooth and fairies and invisible pink unicorns. JUST STOP CAGING THEM! Same too with pigs and cattle - LET THEM EAT GRASS not bloody "grain fed"! Are you meat eaters not even slightly interested that living beings suffer so you can eat your oversized dinner? Bah - I've had enough of humans and their 'religions' and all that hoo haa. We are all just apes who got lucky and think we can kill/control everything "because we can".

I wish I had a manure deflector when I read articles from Mr Kellaway, Rees, Rudd and Co. Pollywaffle-doodle-all-day.

Listen you lot - I made a comment about this issue last year on this blog when Cr Osbourne called for free-range eggs at council functions and Mayor Tate and Co said "Oh we have better things to think about than that" - and I was LAUGHED AT AND SCORNED. "Oh grow up" some tool commented. Bah, and humbug. Where are all you pro-battery farming people now - COME OUT COME OUT!
