 Men with ponytails

Men with ponytails

The moustache is a fine thing. It is an adornment given gravitas by its long list of famous wearers, and men who can grow and support a mo, as they're so affectionately and respectfully known, are privileged indeed.

I felt constrained to get that out of the way early, as a man so blessed, because in my column in The Herald today I've written about men with ponytails. Is there anything more ridiculous, anything tonsorially sadder than a man of has-been years trying so hard to be the man he dreamed he'd be? They'd do better in dreadlocks.

We see the ponytail as an inane affectation, but ponytail himself sees it is as a measure of his sophistication, guru-like wisdom, unique creativity and mystery.

What do you reckon, wankers, whackers or just sad tryhards?

Some men like moustaches and beards, some like ponytails. Live and let live, Jeff. Personally I dont understand why men like facial hair, however natural it might be. But ponytails are also natural and I think ponytails on men can be nice, sometimes. But I would never criticise individuals for their choice. Maybe you need to get your own life (sense of identity, better self-esteem etc) if you feel the need to criticise others.

I'm ambivalent about ponytails, but I do think that any male without a full beard isn't truly a real man.

Number 1 crewcuts are the way to go low maitnance, i cant understand why a bloke would want to spend as much time as a women in front of a mirror putting their hair in pony tails .

not only ponytails but you can add earrings in the same category. Poor deluded souls desperately trying to hold onto their youth while the rest of us just laugh at them. I once saw a guy, who would have been in his 50s, completely bald apart from a 6 inch grey ponytail. I'm sure he thought he was cool but he looked so ridiculous that I laughed out loud when I saw him. People who refuse to embrace their age should be pitied.

All of the above , i reckon its to take the focus away from the rest of the body and usually daggy apparel.

Jeff are you balding, cause this story reeks of jealousy! I think you secretly wish you could have the long hair look! Cmon, confess!!!

No, thick head of (short) hair. Are you a ponytail, Gazza?

two things: First, where is the DS? Second, i confess i had to look it up. Tonsorial - pertaining to barbers. From the latin meaning "to shear". Nice word Jeff - i took the bait.

And where, indeed, is Buell and TT and the Directeur Sportif's most breathless detractors? Do they all have ponytails? Does the DS have a ponytail?

Hi Jeff, those men with ponytails are about 200 years behind the times. They were the go in convict times but have been outdated every since. You are spot on!

In the later half of the 18th century men in Europe and North America wore their hair tied back (pony-tail); it was even a mandatory hairstyle for men in all European Armies until the early 1800s. The British army was the first to dispense with pony-tails making short hair compulsory. The pony tail made a come-back after Sean Connery made it popular in the movie "Medicine Man"(1992). The actor, Steven Segal also wears his hair in a pony tail, influenced by Japanese Samurai's, while Green political activists favour the pony-tail for reasons I don't understand. I'm surprised Jeff that you admit to having a soup-strainer, as facial hair these days is out-of-favour. There hasn't been a US president with facial hair since 1913 (William Taft). The last Australian Prime Minister with facial hair would have been Billy Hughes (1923). If I wasn't bald and grey, and had plenty of hair, I'd have a pony tail LOL.
