Privacy in public life

John Della Bosca has paid a high personal and public price for his relationship with a woman half his age, and many among you will nod in approval. Why? Why should a private, and legal, relationship have any impact on his public career?

Why, indeed, should it be disclosed? I know, and you may too, that the media justifies such damaging intrusions into the personal, private life of politicians and others as being in the public interest, and in Mr Della Bosca's case it would argue that it has provided information that should be available to the public in a democracy. It's a bonus when the disclosure is salacious!

This argument is troubled by its inconsistency. A prime example of that inconsistency was the media's keeping the long affair involving prominent federal pollies Gareth Evans and Cheryl Kernot under wraps for years until 2002. But Mr Della Bosca is married! So were Mr Evans and Ms Kernot.

If you believe that Mr Della Bosca has his just deserts, it is very likely that you've based that opinion on morals. But your morals are a guide for living your life, not for me living mine or John Della Bosca living his. Your morals, and your attitude to marriage, are your business, just as Mr Della Bosca's are his.

So tell us why you see Mr Della Bosca's relationship with a young woman as your business.

Jeff, I don't see bosca's business as mine at all, but, he has been an apparent 'arse' at times according to earlier reports of misbehavior in restaurants and the like, so perhaps he has had it coming...funny thing is, he was voted in by the public. None of my business really..perhaps he should try reading up on 'taoist' philosophy, it might keep him out of harms way.

Mr Della Bosca knew full well the extent of his position and responsibilities when he took on the position within Parliament. He was fully aware he and his actions would be fully scrutinised. I believe most of the outrage is not so directed at the illicit laision but more to the complete abrogation of his oath of office, his arrogance of position and using this position and power to influence a no doubt gullible female and then his apparent discarding of her after his dalliance..But wait there is more, he is no longer a candidate for Premier - coincidence. This affair has amazing similarities to the Milton Okopolous afair, both persons involved with much younger persons, allegations of consumation in Parliament office and arrogance to feel they were not accountable to anybody but themselves.

The telling difference, Miz, is that Mr Della Bosca's relationship was perfectly legal.

"It is stupid though, isn't it? After all these years, to go out after a mid-life crisis with a 26-year-old." No the stupidity was in mistreating her as is encouraging her to believe that it was more than it was (perhaps a seedy little deception) , but then the obviously worst thing to do was to stupidly irk her ire by withdrawing (pun intended) from the relationship and doing so in a way to obviously create distress - - distress that found a target to vent its spleen. So was he set up? yes of course he was by his own personality and subsequent behaviour. This unique behaviour personality ingrained since it started its journey from a child to person that he has become and keeps displaying for all to see -exposing himself (pun intended) for all to see. None different than most of us - just as arrogant as Militon Orkopolus that he could think he could get away with being seen as a cad and a high profile politician. Very stupid and thank god he ddnt get a tilt at the ceo's job? Morality ? well he additted to being a sinner and thus hippocrite -thats between him and his familty, church and god. But in some parts of the world (that costs us lives) she would be publically stoned .

MijzJasper is right about the comparisms. the arrogance is what he is paying for -the fact that he thought he was above public scrutiny. And of course a simple axiom "hell hath no fury..." That stupidity is enough alone to make him need to spend time in the wilderness for a while. He could work with abused children ?

jeff C, in response to your question about teaching in China on a subsistence allowance..yes, the salary I earn is only the equivilent of the dole, but, that said, the average wage per month here is about 2500 to 3000 yuan a month, I earn 5000 plus free apartment, plus power allowance of 300 per month, plus free medical, plus a travel bonus of 2200 a year, I also have private students at 100 yuan an hour, my return airfair is covered as well, when and if I want go back to Australia, so, in short it is a good deal. The living expenses are very cheap,... 5 yuan for ciggies, 2.50 for 500 ml bottle of 4% "Chingdao" beer. I can live very comfortably on less than 50 yuan a day, so as you can see, I can save most, if not all of my salary. Problem being when it is converted to $AUD, it isn't a great deal, still, it is impossible to save money when one is on the dole in Australia. I really do live a very comfortable life. I recommend it to anyone who is having problems getting a job, if you are in a position to travel, do it and also bridge the cultural gap while your at it.

Did you get the work through an organisation, Suz? And do you need special training or qualifications other than the capacity to speak English?

Jeff gay marriage is really for our lesbian sisterhood. In my experience women's partnerships wont survive serial promiscuity, but the reality is gay blokes usually end up having as much sex as they want anywhere and its no big deal (that's why you're so jealous). So gay "marriage" for blokes is a bit meaningless in terms of the conventional understanding of the marriage contract. Here's a joke to illustrate the point--"why do women watch porno movies all the way to the end?---they want to see if they get married!"

Since iguanagate, alot of people have been gunning for Della Bosca, His Arrogance is a turn off for most people and alot of people are happy he has fallen. Its a typical trate of this Labor Government that there is alot of arrogance, from people like Della Bosca, Tripodi and Sartor. Power went to their heads and I for one am happy one has fallen, hoping against hope the other 2 will suffer the same fate. People may say, tall poppy sindrome, but unlike alot of people, i admire and respect politicians, and personally, these 3 cronies are restricting anything Rees can do to improve this State and make the hard and unpopular decisions. People like JWH, and Peter Costello were in power a long time just like this NSW Government but kept their arrogance hidden mostly, and i admire both those gentlemen, but io feel no remorse for Della Bosca, just sheer delight. I don't care how he fell, and i know his private life is none of my business and i don't really care bout it, just happy he's gone and NSW is a better state for it.

Jeff, I did a short course...TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other Languages) it is an internationally recognized course that allows you to teach English. The course is conducted by the Australian Training Academy. They have courses throughout the year. The course can be done online or you can go to the classes, there are a few different levels that can be obtained, from the basic up the diploma level, I opted for around the middle somewhere. Jobs in China are almost one hundred percent guaranteed, come to think of it... make that 100% guaranteed, if you are a native English language speaker and you do not look Asian... (it does sound rather discriminatory) but the schools want Aussies, americans, english and the like who do not look asian, as they think perhaps the english will have an asian accent which they are wholeheartedly trying to avoid ...there are a few of african and indian people as well...basically the commonwealth nations....in short the capacity to speak English is what is wanted. It is very funny when after listening to you, the students will pick up your accent...my accent is reasonably strong, so you end up with a class room of 'ockers'

I don't really think it is anyone's business but JDB, BN and the mystery woman. However as one of the parties decided to go public. That I'm afraid is just the luck of the draw for JDB - hell hath no fury like a woman scorned as the saying goes, but I imagine the bollocking he'll get from BN might exceed even that. As for the public opprobrium, I suspect it is directly proportional to the public loathing felt by many about JDB. As for the anonymity of JDB’s young conquest, either a media cheque book or vengeance from the JDB camp will see her outed sooner rather than later.
