John Della Bosca has paid a high personal and public price for his relationship with a woman half his age, and many among you will nod in approval. Why? Why should a private, and legal, relationship have any impact on his public career?
Why, indeed, should it be disclosed? I know, and you may too, that the media justifies such damaging intrusions into the personal, private life of politicians and others as being in the public interest, and in Mr Della Bosca's case it would argue that it has provided information that should be available to the public in a democracy. It's a bonus when the disclosure is salacious!
This argument is troubled by its inconsistency. A prime example of that inconsistency was the media's keeping the long affair involving prominent federal pollies Gareth Evans and Cheryl Kernot under wraps for years until 2002. But Mr Della Bosca is married! So were Mr Evans and Ms Kernot.
If you believe that Mr Della Bosca has his just deserts, it is very likely that you've based that opinion on morals. But your morals are a guide for living your life, not for me living mine or John Della Bosca living his. Your morals, and your attitude to marriage, are your business, just as Mr Della Bosca's are his.
So tell us why you see Mr Della Bosca's relationship with a young woman as your business.
