 The Hunter's best pies

The Hunter's best pies

The meat pie needs a Michelin-style rating system, a Southern Cross University academic argues, and I'm all for it. There's a great deal of pie grief in the trial and error required to find a good pie, although that's not what has prompted the call of Dr Robert Smith at the Australasian Regional Food Conference. Dr Smith wants a star rating system for pies as part of a North Coast meat pie trail to entice tourists off the Pacific Highway and into the bypassed towns and pie shops. The meat pie, he says, has retained many of its traditional qualities in the pie outlets of the North Coast, and while that may be true I am sure the Hunter Region has pies at least their match.

We need a Hunter Region pie trail, so where will we start? I suggest Terry and Patty's Pie Shop in Cooks Hill, and next stop would be curry pie with peas and chilli sauce at Harry's Cafe de Wheels on Newcastle's harbour foreshore. Where next? And what makes a good pie, and, for that matter, what makes a pie not good? I look for a gravy that's not too runny, a pastry that flakes at least on the top, a case that holds the contents, and if it's curry, my fave, a curry pie made for people who like curry pies, not for people who don't like curry pies.

So, where are the best pies of the Hunter?

French hot bread shop on the corner of glebe and brunker does (or did when i last lived nearby a couple years ago) a hell of a better pie then most gourmet places, and charges darbys prices.

Might not be the best there is, but by far the best for a reasonable price.

Morisset Bakehouse - great food - great service. Pies, cakes, sandwich bar, coffee.

Great people. Open 5am, great for us workers, very busy.

I don't like pies with huge pie crust all around - I just break it off and throw it away.

Pies etc have never been the same since Dransfield Pies in Darby St (Now Darby's Pies) was taken over. At its height in 60's there were no never better pies, pasties or especially the sausage rolls anywhere. Bill Dransfield had his own ingredients, I dont know if they were secret receipes or not, but I have never experienced the taste replicated anywhere.

Chunky steak pieces in a rich gravy could tempt me.

The trip to the North Coast of NSW has a few different routes, coastal and inland.

I went by the New England Highway through Armidale recently, and travelled through Tamworth late on a Sunday night.

Despite numerous Driver Reviver signs for the country music fans, the only place in the whole town where you could get a can of coke was from the Emergency section of the local hospital. I bought 3. Hungry Jacks opened at 5:00AM.

You need a solid well known brand of pie, with defined quality standards to help the haphazard traveller.

A lot of years ago when Darby's pies were made and sold at just the one outlet in Darby Street Cooks Hill.

They were a great pie.

You may be thinking, intouch, of the Dransfield pies mentioned here by MizJasper. I can't remember them. I must say I don't eat Darby's pies because I'm uncomfortable about the low price! My sons, though, have never let that worry them.

The Hunters best pies are at the Wurlitzer Bakery in Woodburn, near Evans Head.

Jordon's Bakery on wharf road sort of opposite crowne plaza does a great pie (and coffee, bread, cakes, breakfasts).

Everyone must have stopped at Fredo's pies north of Kempsey?

When I drove to Brisbane recently, on the way back I stopped for a pie, and there was one coach, two semis and about 20 cars parked.... so yes it was crowded, but still efficient.

I don't like Fredo's pies at all, Leah, but it seems that thousands do. Maybe the sign proclaiming Best Pies in Australia does the job. If I sold scones, coffee, cake or anything edible I'd have such a sign.

Any pie from Ridgy Didge pies in Abermain. I especially like their 'Ned Kelly'.

Ridgey Didge pies in Clarence St, Port Macquarie, just off the main street, are exceptional too.
