Profile: Wilma

Wilma, female, age 43, height 155cm, weight 60kg.

Mother of two, sedentary office job, hates exercise, would rather eat less than move more, from an obese family and therefore genetically disadvantaged (that's my story, and I'm sticking to it).

Goal weight: 55kg by Oct 1. (Have already lost 5kg this year).

Weight loss plan: Following (loosely rather than strictly) Weight Watchers principles and chanting "my body is a temple".

Weakness: More than one biscuit with a cup of tea. More than one wine before dinner.

Biggest challenge: Office morning teas.

Exercise plan: More walking around shopping centres.

After a weekend hurrah involving cashews, CCs, red wine and double helpings of apple strudel and ice-cream, I'm on the straight and narrow, Jeff. Weighed in yesterday at 60kg, and am looking forward to being 55kg in 10 weeks. Repeat after me "My body is a temple". . .

Hi Wilma, my wife and four adult daughters discuss dieting every day. Their weights range from 48 kilos to 55. Once my wife hits 58 kilos its 'on' .... small meals. Sometimes they eat like a horse for three days then diet for a fortnight Yes my body is my temple.

Ha! My dieting is not quite as yo yo as the women in your life, Old Boy. I tend to stay at a comfortable weight of say 55kg for about five years, then it all goes to hell and I bung on five or 10 kg and stay at that weight for about five years, before taking matters in hand. But, this time, I'm gonna get to 55kg and stay there! Im determined.

Week 1 weigh in. NO WEIGHT LOSS! Can't actually say I'm surprised. The week has been full of chocolate brownies and red wine, and then my sister arrived yesterday with some delicious melting moments with passionfruit icing! Ah! Saboteurs! So, tomorrow, ladies, is another day, in fact, today, ladies is another day, and I'm hading on the straight and narrow as we speak. Can I make it a kilo loss this week? Probably not, but I'm trying for a half.

Week 3 weigh in. 60.5kg! No gain from last week, but an overall gain of half a kilo since the challenge began. I'm fearing complacency . . . I'm fearing failure . . .

I think I'm about to surrender. After a week away at a management course at a gorgeous hotel, I have added a kilo. I came back full of love and good ideas, but with extra baggage!!!

Well, it's a month after official surrender, and I've gained two more bloody kilos! Enough is enough. I hope you all did better than me. Oh well, off to the junk machine. . .

Hi Wilma, I have the support of my wife who went to the trouble of meticulously counting the calories of my meals she prepared. This and a strict vegan diet made it a lot easier for me this time round. Hope you have success with your challenge.
