Gillard's flexibility makes her difficult to reject

Gillard's flexibility makes her difficult to reject

THE de-facto co-prime ministership of Australia began last night when Julia Gillard invited the three rural independent MPs to help her set the date for the next election in three years' time.

It is a degree of influence that Gillard did not offer any of her own MPs, a power-sharing that no modern prime minister has ever contemplated.

At this rate, the Prime Minister's office will need to be enlarged to allow room for three more desks. It is a measure of Gillard's determination to win over the independents and form the next government.

But Tony Abbott was not so obliging, on this point and also, crucially, on a request from the independents to see the Treasury's costings of Coalition policy.

The independents want to be able to see the expert Treasury assessments of the national finances under both a Gillard government and an Abbott government.

And while it is unconventional, Gillard was as accommodating as possible. But last night Abbott folded his arms and jammed his fingers in his ears, metaphorically speaking.

Is Abbott frightened or cocky? Is he determined to hide the truth of the Coalition's budget arithmetic from public view? Or just very confident that he will ultimately win the support of the three independents in any case?

In either case, it is a bad look. He just made it harder for the independents to agree to support an Abbott government.

The independents, Bob Katter, Robert Oakeshott and Tony Windsor, yesterday made seven identical requests to the two leaders in a letter, all on governance and none on pork barrelling. Gillard agreed to all seven requests.

On their request that the leaders pledge that an incoming government would serve the full three-year term, Abbott said yes, but Gillard went further: ''In fact, I am prepared to work with you to nominate a date,'' she wrote.

If she is prepared to yield on this, one of a prime minister's most treasured prerogatives, we have to believe that Gillard really wasn't kidding when she offered to run a ''more inclusive'' government.

And on the Treasury costings, the caretaker Prime Minister went so far as to agree to do all she could to give the independents access.

The trick here is that the briefings are so confidential that even Gillard isn't allowed to see them.

The public service writes two such books, one for each eventuality - a Red Book in the event the government is returned, and a Blue Book in case the opposition wins power.

It is strictly for the newly elected prime minister. But Gillard agreed to seek advice from the public service and to consult Abbott to see whether the information could be made available.

It would be a change to the caretaker conventions, but Gillard said, ''I am predisposed to assist.'' On yesterday' evidence, she really means it.

If you were to bend Gillard too far she would snap. The covering over her communist carcass would then be exposed for all to see.

Communism seems to have become significantly more right-wing these days then.

Communism you reckon - more like Soft Socialism Bevan 'Santamaria' Julias political ethos would seem more equitable than any Coalition one that has more to do with the massaging of the obscene and insatiable corporate - carcass we hope and is philisophically alligned to making the filthy rich richer while eroding any social safety net that remains in tact in this country of greedy individuals. Time to change the brand from Liberal with a very small' l' to Capitilist with a very large 'C' I believe.

You have "flexibility " confused with plotting, lying, backstabbing and scheming

Is Gillard so hell bent on power she will do anything to lord it over the rest of the population or is Tony Abbot showing the measure of leadership by saying you are only a minority of three and you should not have control of the government.

Julia Gillard cannot be trusted, plain and simple. I am not a Rudd fan by any means, but the way she usurped the prime ministership was absolutely appalling. Her so called flexibility would be better described as "sucking up" to the independents.

More like her arse is on the line, there is no way you can trust the Labor Party after all that's happen. It is run by the factional unionist and of Labour get in will also have a strong alliance with the unscrutinised Greens. The Greens have never had any of their policies costed or put out there to be scrutinised. If Gillard gets in up go all our utility cost, and down goes our standard of living.

I think that Bevan's comments ought to be consigned to the dust-bin of history. If he genuinely believes in what he says, then I would consider him to be a self-declared dullard. It really does prove that the Abbott Liberal camp is intellectually bankrupt. It is no wonder that former Liberal Party Prime Minister The Honourable Malcolm Fraser OAM resigned his life long Liberal Party membership. He, like a majority of Australians hates right wing religious fascists, considering their kind as a cancer on good Australian fair go values. Jim and Bevan appear to be outcasts.

On the contrary Ralf, its comes down to who is capable of running the country. In 3 short years the labour pickles has shown they are clearly incapable. Waste and failed schemes litter their CV. Not surprising that the majority of first preferences went to the Coalition. Without the tree huggers preferences Joolya would be looking a for a job. Probably still will be as the man who has annoited himself as KIng, the ShortONE, is probably sharpening his knife as we speak.

Leaving aside infantile communist / fascist abuse, at least Gillard is willing to speak to people, to negotiate and to treat people with respect. God help us if Abbott gets in; he will complete the demolition of freedom almost completed under the Howard regime. He is an authoritarian ideologue who abuses anyone who disagrees with him & who publicly despises other Australians. Like Howard his whole career is based on deception, concealing his real agenda.
