WHAT to name the Stadium Formerly Known As Ausgrid?
Here’s a quick recap.
The Knights’ and now Jets’ HQ started life in 1970 as the International Sports Centre, then became the rather epic-sounding Marathon Stadium.
Marathon Stadium. You’d half expect to see a sandal-wearing Charlton Heston doing laps in a chariot.
Unfortunately, it was corporatised into EnergyAustralia Stadium. Then EnergyAustralia became Ausgrid, and Ausgrid waived its naming rights.
So right now it’s called Hunter Stadium. Lame. We can do better.
Our first thought is to enlist an iconic local brand.
Charlestown Square Oval? Kloster Field? Henny Penny Park?
Wayne Mullen’s suggestion on Twitter, The Newcastle Thunderdome, wasn’t too shabby. And it got us thinking another way.
The Kingdom? Meh. What else do Knights do? They joust. How about the Jousting Field? Or the ChivalryDome?
Oh. Hear that? That’s the sound of a thousand Jets fans slamming fists on tables, and punching computer screens. We mustn’t forget them.
Hmmm. Something to do with planes. The Aircraft Carrier? The Landing Strip? Tinkler’s Hangar?
As you can see, we need your help.
