P-plater escapes as car cut in half

30 May, 2009 05:00 AM
A P-PLATER had a miracle escape yesterday when her car was torn apart by a truck on the F3 Freeway at Black Hill.

Firefighters said the 19-year-old woman turned out of the emergency U-turn lane and into the path of the oncoming truck about 10am.

The truck cut her sedan in pieces, sending the driver's section of the car flying one way and carrying the rear end along.

Despite the damage inflicted on her Honda Civic the woman walked away from the wreck with only a bump on the head and minor injuries to her shoulder and side.

She was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

Emergency services said they were amazed she survived.

"She's amazingly lucky, amazingly," deputy fire captain Evan Dowling said.

"We don't see many cars cut into two like that any more, it's a real lucky escape."

Newcastle Highway Patrol officers are investigating the crash and expect to speak to the woman over the weekend.

Tom Corey, who was driving the truck that collided with the car, said he initially thoughts things would be a lot worse.

"I saw her turn out and I just went 'Oh shit'," he said.

"She's very lucky."

He said the crash had caused about $60,000 worth of damage to his truck.

In another crash, an 80-year-old couple was injured when their car rolled near Singleton about 1.30pm.

Paramedics said the male driver lost control of the car on the New England Highway and rolled.

The female passenger suffered head injuries and both were flown to John Hunter Hospital.

A passing motorist stopped to help the couple and freed the woman who was trapped in the overturned vehicle.

Does this young lady know how lucky she is? I hope this accident stays with her and she tells others about her lucky escape... and how that split second decision can change a persons life...Having said all that it is difficult when you are on the freeway to turn around if you do not make the correct exit...maybe this needs more attention. Stay safe on the roads

What a fool, it is illegal and dangerous to perform U turns on 110 km/h limited roads, with limited vision. When are people to realise that taking a little extra time is much better than times' up

One of the most dangerous things a person can in driving is to do a U-Turn on a freeway class road, often into or across the path of much faster closing traffic. A hideously stupid thing to do. Plan your trip. To do so is an offence nationwide, and in all other countries as well in relation to freeway/motorway category roads, as its a legally required prohibition under the "United Nations Conventions on Road Traffic" (along with No reversing etc). That is why we have signs at every freeway median crossover access, RESTRICTING use of the point to "POLICE AND EMERGENCY VEHICLES ONLY". The offence in my view should exceed $800 and carry 6 demerit points. People will note RTA are testing two cross-over point barrier "GATELOCK" designs at the Sydney end, with a view of eventually installing one of the systems at ALL F3 median cross-over points, to stop people like this girl doing an utterly stupid thing.

the young woman should know that the emergency u-turn is for emergency personal only not anyone.

Well it seems her stupidity has been lost in the miracle of her survival. What was she doing in an emergency u-turn lane? Are they not for emergency vehicles only? How blind could she be to pull out in front of a truck? I hope the poor truck driver will get compensation for the damage to his truck

A friend of mine was recently involved in the twin fatality road accident concerning two young women at whittingham. It appears within a short space of time we could have had another fatality of a cause of similar nature.Younger drivers may need more educating in performing safe U turns.Take care
