Police senior constable charged with dangerous driving

A POLICE officer has been charged with dangerous driving and negligent driving after he crashed into a power pole during a pursuit.

A male senior constable and a male constable were patrolling the Pacific Highway in Jewells about 1.15am on August 14, 2011 when they initiated a pursuit with a motorcyclist.

The motorcyclist was followed a short distance onto Kalaroo Road.

Police will allege that about 550 metres north of the Dirkala Close intersection the police car left the road and crashed into a power pole.

Both police officers were transported by ambulance to the John Hunter Hospital.

The driver received several stitches to a wound to his head while the constable required leg surgery.

Following an extensive investigation by the Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit, the 35-year-old senior constable, who is attached to the Northern Region, was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

The man will appear in Newcastle Local Court on March 21, 2012.
