Two in custody over alleged ambo assault

A man and a woman are in custody after two ambulance officers were allegedly assaulted at the corner of Hunter and Union streets early this morning.

The fracas begain about 1.30am when patrolling police went to the assistance of the officers, who were attempting to treat an intoxicated man.

The man was surrounded by a group of about 10 people.

Police said that as a female ambulance officer bent down to assist the man he allegedly elbowed her in the face.

A woman from the crowd then allegedly approached police and a wrestle ensued.

A 20-year-old Waratah man was charged with two counts of assault and resisting police, and a 20-year-old Maquarie Hills woman was charged with assault and resisting police.

They are due to appear in Newcastle Local Court on March 27.
