TO celebrate Earth Hour 2009, The Herald is giving readers the chance to win an exclusive Mark Richards surfboard.

The world surfing champion and Earth Hour ambassador will personally shape the 198-centimetre fish board, which will feature artwork by DigiArt Imaging.

The surfboard will be ready to ride at the end of April.

To enter, collect three of the four coupons published in The Herald.

One coupon was published on Saturday, another is on this page (at left) and more coupons will be published tomorrow and Wednesday.

Put the coupons in an envelope and post it to: Earth Hour Surfboard, PO Box 510, Newcastle 2300. Entries can also be delivered to The Herald office at 28-30 Bolton Street, Newcastle.

On the back of the envelope put your name, address and daytime telephone number.

Only original coupons will be accepted for the competition. Photocopies will not be allowed.

How much fossil fuel does it take to make a surfboard, considering the fluorocarbons used in making the foam, the electricity used in running the grinder that will send millions of dangerous particles into the atmosphere, the dangerous chemicals involved in making the resin, the petrol or biodiesel consumed in getting to and from the factory and out to do the press release and media ...? Is this necessary in a time when we need to conserve fossil fuels so 1,000,000,000 Chinese can each get a car and an aircondioner? Am I a hypocrite and tosser, or a realist?
