Way to go for planet

THE message of Earth Hour is "Step It Up" and Hunter TAFE's graphic design students did not need any encouragement to run with the theme.

Twenty students took part in this year's Hunter Earth Hour poster competition with Clare Hodgins's design announced as the winner yesterday.

Ms Hodgins, 19, a second-year graphic design and communication diploma student, used traffic signs to convey the Earth Hour message.

"The basic idea came pretty quickly and I spent the rest of the time developing it," she said.

"Signs are something that we encounter every day and I thought is was an effective way of saying we need to give way to the earth."

Ms Hodgins's poster will be printed in The Herald as a pin-up poster next Tuesday.

Earth Hour will be held on March 28 from 8.30pm.
