1250 retail jobs at Charlestown Square

21 May, 2010 09:23 PM
A RECRUITMENT drive is under way to fill about 1250 retail jobs created in the $470million redevelopment of Charlestown Square, which is due for completion in October.

A website was launched yesterday for people to register interest in the positions.

Charlestown Square general manager Peter Francis said the redevelopment would add 110 stores to the shopping centre, increasing the number of shops to 280.

It would have ‘‘new brands never before seen in the Hunter’’.

“The GPT Group’s development of Charlestown Square has provided hundreds of jobs during construction and more than 1200 retail positions will become available over the coming months with the centre’s opening,’’ Mr Francis said.

Mr Francis said the recruitment drive would ensure all people, including minority groups, had the chance to apply for retail positions.

Charlestown Square aimed to provide retail traineeships to students.

Lake Macquarie City Council was helping to identify disabled, mature, young and indigenous people to apply for positions, Mr Francis said.

The University of Newcastle and support service Mayumarri were nominating applicants who had suffered abuse.

RAS Recruitment would open an office at Charlestown Square in June to help job seekers and retailers with the interview and selection process.

Workshops on developing ‘‘job-ready skills’’ would be held at Charlestown Square on Monday, May 31, and Monday, June 14.

The new fresh food mall is due to open in August and the rest of the centre will open in October.

More than 1000 new car parking spaces will be built, taking the total to 3500.

The job website is www.myjobatcharlestownsquare.com. au.

Why do shoppers want an extra 110 shops? There are more than enough already. Or could it be GPT need the rent from an extra 110 shops?

You have not "created" a job when it's been at the expense of one elsewhere. Small independent stores will be consumed in this process.

bet they are all casual jobs.

Well it is a great start to use a recruitment agency that does not seem to be Hunter based and charges a recruitment fee of $2390 per listing.

BIgfeller, Steve, Andrew, Chamelon and Charlestown-what-ever my bet about 15-20.000 people will vote with their cars and feet each day to shop at the new Charlestown Square! The new range of shops will keep money in the Hunter region that is currently being spent by local shoppers who travel to Sydney and Melbourne.

That's the plan "thinkitthrough" but there's no certainty that people will do that. After all who wants to shop at Charlestown when they can go to Sydney and Melbourne and enjoy the social delights there. You're trapped in a small-town mentality, people love the big cosmopolitan cities where they can combine shopping, entrainment and being away from Newcastle. It's the package not just one aspect of it! In the meanwhile shops are closing and moving away from the centre in droves. Customers are giving up on Charlestown because of the stupidity of the developers. Small men in a small town!

thinkitthrough,,, if you look at the list of shops on the recruitment agency site there does not seem to be anything other than the usual common shops. Certainly from what I could see there are no options to stop the Sydney/Melbourne travel.

Hi Bigfeller, I am the owner of Recruitment Administration Support, the recruitment agency that is working with GPT Charlestown Square to streamline the recruitment process for retailers and job seekers at Charlestown Square. I can verify that my business is proudly 100% Newcastle owned and operated. We have created a process whereby job seekers can submit their expression of interest just the once to be considered for a great number of fulltime, parttime and casual employment opportunities (from sales assistant, service and maintenance staff to management) in the Centre. It's an easy, paper-free and time-saving process. We are very excited and proud to be involved in a project that is assisting so many local people into employment! Charlestown Square was already too big, and now it's going to be even bigger & have an extra 110 shops?? This is what is called inappropriate development. If developers got their way, they would want every bit of land developed and turned into a jungle of buildings. While I don't support Charlestown Square getting any bigger than it was, we should be encouraging public transport, and discouraging car use, so hopefully the paid parking after a certain time stays. And remember with these two words with this over development: "Ferris Oval"
