$18m Tomago bus factory to open

15 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
VOLGREN Australia's $18 million Tomago bus factory will be officially opened today.

The factory, which will create 250 jobs, will build 150 articulated buses for the State Government under a $106 million contract.

"There is a growing demand for effective public transport, and buses are one of the best solutions for any shortage," Volgren managing director Peter Dale said.

"New bus routes can be quickly introduced and, if buses come often enough, experience shows that passengers are prepared to get on board."

The Newcastle factory is Volgren's fourth in Australia.

Volgren buses are built using a unique aluminium system, which makes them stronger and lighter.

Why are we building articulated buses here when Transport for London are scrapping theirs due to numerous problems? Couldn't we just purchase Britains redundant fleet?

Instead of banging on about removing a rail line in Newcastle how about some forward thinking about public transport to Beresfield Industrial Park, Tomago and Williamtown - both sides of politics better start planning for public transport instead of thinking how rich they can get selling land at Wickham and along the rail corridor which is so valuable because it is not undermined and has nothing to do with any traffic study ever
