20-year campaign for Hunter expressway pays off

16 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
CONSTRUCTION on the long-overdue Hunter Expressway is the end of a 20-year personal battle, federal Hunter MP Joel Fitzgibbon said.

Mr Fitzgibbon spent yesterday morning inspecting pre-construction work on the expressway before meeting apprentices at PWG King and Sons Engineering to discuss the Federal Government's Apprentice Kickstart program.

Following the inspection, Mr Fitzgibbon said the start of the Seahampton to Branxton link road was a first step in the right direction for the region.

"This is a great step forward and for me, the result of a 20-year fight to get something done," he said.

"For 12 years of Liberal leadership there was nothing being done to ease congestion here, and now something is finally being done for these communities."

Last year the $1 million Lower Hunter Transport Needs Study recommended the Hunter Expressway be constructed to ease congestion on the New England Highway, which would be increased by the Huntlee development.

Mr Fitzgibbon has been a vocal supporter of an expressway since his days as a Cessnock City councillor in the 1980s and 1990s.

The expressway is expected to open at the end of 2013 and will ease congestion in the Hunter as well as providing jobs during its construction, Mr Fitzgibbon said.

I'm not doubting the necessity of the Hunter Expressway to ease congestion between Branxton and Rutherford, but really Mr Fitzgibbon, are you going to continue to flog the dead horse of the Huntlee development?

ha ha and yet a haul rd expressway for coal trucks has been ploughed through highly protected mature bushland containing several threatened species down in lake macquarie with no delay and little knowledge by locals until after commencement (and therefore little resistance) I suppose its just a matter of gov't priorities really isnt it? Oh & I understand that this coal haul rd, while owned by power company was subsidised by the federal govt to the tune of 20 million.

Congratulations , this road is long overdue and will be a great asset for the future of motoring in this area. Can we soon get the roads around the Vineyards fixed. This top tourist spot is being held back by the condition of roads. They might even have more character if they were graded gravel.

Ding ding ding ding. The bells are ringing Newcasatle City Council. Where are your plans for the integration of this major roadway into the Newcastle LGA marketing, transport and social plans etc. Will you allocate funding for serious works to allow completion timed to match the opening of the expressway?

Joel, You refer to "pre construction" work. Tell us though when construction will begin and, more importantly, when will the road all the way to Branxton be finished? We all know the Newcastle "bypass" very well and so are naturally very sceptical of anything any pollie says about roads around here.

20 year campaign! but blames the liberals for 12 years of inaction. Still leaves 8 years of inaction by labor!!!! Any way it will be a good thing, now we just need F3 to link up with the freeway at Hetherbrae, complete the inner city bypass from Charlestown to Jesmond, duel lane out to the Airport and Nelson Bay AND fix the City to Maitland congestion.. Oh one more I can think of, now I havnt travelled on it for a while but Im tipping the Buckets Way is still something that resembles the Luner Landscape rather than a road. Im sure theres more around the region but hey its a start, KEEP WORKING MR Fitzgibbon!!

So he has been fighting for 20 years but blames it on 12 years of Liberal ignorance. Sorry Craig, that means the ALP was ignorant for the first 8 years. Typical pollie, dont get too dizzy with the ALP spin there Craig
