$2260 a week ... and there's overtime

10 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
HUNTER coalminers are earning about $2260 a week before overtime according to the latest official figures.

Coal Services Australia says the average weekly earnings at all Hunter coalmines was $2258 in the three months to July last year, the most recent figures available.

That equates to annual income of about $117,400 a year.

Mining official Greg Sharp said many mineworkers would earn less and some would earn more.

At its Tahmoor mine south of Sydney, Xstrata says it is offering workers a 37 per cent increase from an average of $92,500 to $127,000 by 2014.

It's not only miners , most rostered shift workers would earn this type of amount whether they are at an aluminium smelters , coal loaders and the like. It's a good thing they do earn these figures as well , how else could the welfare of the bogans be maintained , the tax dollars are needed to fund baby bonuses and the like - next time you see a miner you should thank him for his efforts in keeping the welfare state going.

Is it any wonder our youth are not getting trades or tertiary education when they can earn this amount of money with minimal training. Is it also any wonder Governments of all persuasions simply rubber stamp mining developments. The royalties and the income tax they generate is huge.

And they earn every cent of it, try working in a mine, its wet, dirty and noisey. The coal miner today works on average four days a week and up to twelve hours a day. For mine they deserve it.

Now if you can't put enough dosh away for a possible job change if the mines close, then you just aren't sane.

I am so glad I went to Uni for 6 years to obtain a double degree, have a HECS debt of $29k and have a starting salary of $33,900.00 when I could have just left high school at year 10, done a 6 week course and be set for life... Something doesnt seem quite right with the above picture...

Ahh the goldern handcuffs, even if you would like to leave and do something that you are passionate about you can't, locked in by the money driving a truck back and forth for thirty years. It's not all great and fantastic.

I don't begrudge them a cent. Anyone who does should chuck their current job in and sign up.

I'm with you dr P... my husband and I have 4 teenagers and back then there was no baby bonus. Oh and try interest rates back then 27.5 %. Hubby is a diesel mechanic and brings home about $1200 dollars for working 50 + hours a week. Most of these people working have no trade and still they complain that they want more.. Greedy I say

Hey smithy, I'm a shift worker and would earn half that amount of money in a fortnight.
