SUPERMARKET chain Aldi has confirmed it plans to build a $100 million warehouse and distribution centre at Beresfield that is tipped to create 300 jobs.
It has lodged a project application with the NSW Planning Department and says it is seeking to secure the site, near the end of the F3, chosen after a search for suitable spots.
Hunter Land owns the 15-hectare site, which is part of the Freeway North Business Park.
The application says the project would entail a warehouse of 36,400 square metres, a freezer and cool room, an office, plant room, refuse area, a sprinkler tank and pump room, and a truck wash and refuelling area.
The building would be about 16 metres tall and operate 24 hours a day throughout the year.
About 300 car spaces would be provided.
As well as the operational jobs, the project would create about 50 construction jobs, the application said.
A spokeswoman said the German supermarket chain had earlier earmarked the site among several options but had settled on Beresfield.
"At this stage there is no set time frame [for construction]," a spokeswoman said. "However it is part of Aldi's longer term plan to expand its store network in the Newcastle and Hunter Valley region and bring smarter shopping to more people."
Aldi is pursuing a roll-out of stores in the region, including Newcastle, Toronto, Charlestown, Merewether and Kurri Kurri sites.
The application said a traffic study and acoustic assessment would be done.
