 $6m vision for Surf House

$6m vision for Surf House

11 Sep, 2008 11:20 PM
A LONG-awaited deal for redevelopment of Merewether's derelict Surf House was sealed yesterday with an agreement that will clear the way for a $6 million building containing a function centre, restaurant, cafe and public amenities.

Newcastle City Council signed a 50-year lease with a consortium backed by prominent Newcastle developer Keith Stronach and 17 community members.

The consortium's new company, Merewether Beach Pty Ltd, has 90 days to lodge development applications for Surf House's demolition and the new building.

Mr Stronach said the proposal included a promenade, cafe, surf life saving museum, takeaway outlet, and toilet and shower block, all on the ground floor.

The first floor will contain a function room, available to community groups for 10 hours a week and otherwise for commercial hire, an outdoor terrace and veranda.

A restaurant and bar with an outdoor balcony will fill the building's top level.

Mr Stronach said the site presented a fantastic development opportunity.

"It's absolutely iconic," he said. "If you think what's right up and down the coast there are very few examples of things right up and down the beach.

"It [the new surf house] should be used very heavily by all members of the public."

Yesterday's deal was a welcome milestone in Surf House's troubled history.

The 70-year-old building was damaged in the 1989 earthquake and has been closed, declared unsafe, since 1995.

Its decaying condition is of public concern and many consider the council's failure to do something with the building as a regional embarrassment.

Cr Helene O'Neill, who has long called for action on the site, said yesterday's deal was welcome news.

Lord Mayor John Tate said that after much toing and froing, the lease deal and proposed development was a good result.

He declined to comment on the council's potential financial return.

Some, including Greens councillors, had called for the building to be saved, but Mr Stronach said the building had outlived its useful life.

"It's just not viable to repair it," he said.

Well done Mr Stonach !! Put to public use. A man with a bit of vision of things that could be. MR's over Merewether has a ring to it!! But I have to say, the Old Club House has outlasted another council again...

I object to replacing Surf House with a $6 million building, this land should be turned into facilities for families e.g picnic tables B.B.Q etc then all can use it.

Linda - if you haven't noticed there are already plentiful seating and picnic area within 50 metres of Surf House. Toowoon Bay, Kurawa Beach, and many others have building like this, and so long as it is a one-off using only some of the coastline, I'm happy with the project. It looks and sounds great so far...bring it on!

Linda, It's the end of an era for the Clubhouse, that is the last of the old school club houses in Newcastle City area, but what Mr Stonach has proposed is going to be for the public to use, on the ground floor, I was against it myself, but i'm with Bonkers on this one "BRING IT ON", but always remember, it took a wrecking ball to bring it down, not an earthquake, 70yrs of southerly winds or a flood, but a council with a wrecking ball. It's time to get rid of the "Dreaded Hire Fence" Mike Scanlon should do a history spot on what Newcastle beaches looked like when the beaches were full of this style of club house from Newcastle beach all the way to Merewether beach... The beaches looked grand when all these club houses were standing.

The idea seems good. The Surf Club at Noosa has a very popular eatery and 'drinkery' and people there appreciate being right on the beach with its refreshing views. Let's hope this new building is as people-friendly and popular.

There is no mention of parking to match the extra people. Raise the building an extra two or three floors and incorporate a pay to use parking station.

You have lost the plot Bigfeller... how are the cars going to get into the carpark...It's a public walkway at the bottom of the building !

People of Merewether. Note this. Superman Returns featured Superman coming to Newcastle Town for an iconic art deco Newcastle building (Nesca House -Now University House), a building not unlike that of your beautiful Surf House. Ask yourselves whether Superman would bother to save the unispiring 'box' that will replace Merewether Surf House. Ask why you are allowing a public place to be privatised. You should ask your developers to look after your heritage, not replace with soul-less rubbish.

I am concerned about overdevelopment of site of Surf House. We believe that the new development will be a Newcastle answer to The Bondi Diggers Club. I f we examine the restaurant survival at the Wharf area we find that most of these now have liquor licences. This is the likely outcome for the Surf House after 2-3 failed attempts to keep a restaurant alive. The DA requests a 5AM closing time I am told. This would provide the overburdened ratepayers of coastal Merewether with the prospect of early Sunday morning drunken behaviour which now afflicts the inner city. We deserve better and indeed pay for it with very hogh rates. If the area gets a reputation for drunken hooliganism property prices may suffer and in turn rae collection will suffer. I appeal to the long term common sense of council to reject the application for 5Am closing and to consider a more modest proposal of a coffee house like Swells which we know will be successful and more in keeping with the family friendly atmosphere of Merewether Beach

Demolish Surf house now, re-landscape, reserve parkland for future generations, keep commercial buildings behind the main road. Upgrade the life saving club with a deck and better maintained public toilets. Clean-up and repair the bottom of the baths, repair the road and upgrade the carparks.
