CITY Hall is preparing to spend $70,000 workshopping ideas for a design for Laman Street.
The process was initiated after Newcastle councillors put on hold a decision to chop down mature fig trees that make the Cooks Hill strip a picturesque boulevard.
Instead of taking a chainsaw to the ageing trees, which specialists say pose a threat to public safety, Newcastle City Council is hosting a community design workshop to determine what should happen.
Councillors will be asked tonight to authorise $70,000 spending.
Up to 70 people will be involved in the two-day workshop next month.
