$70,000 for Laman Street fig tree session

$70,000 for Laman Street fig tree session

02 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
CITY Hall is preparing to spend $70,000 workshopping ideas for a design for Laman Street.

The process was initiated after Newcastle councillors put on hold a decision to chop down mature fig trees that make the Cooks Hill strip a picturesque boulevard.

Instead of taking a chainsaw to the ageing trees, which specialists say pose a threat to public safety, Newcastle City Council is hosting a community design workshop to determine what should happen.

Councillors will be asked tonight to authorise $70,000 spending.

Up to 70 people will be involved in the two-day workshop next month.

How could a workshop for 70 people cost $1,000 each? Just another example of local government lunacy.

Spend 70,000 dollars on this workshop and i will cut the bloody trees down myself.I would like to see the quote broken down to see how we could spend so much money on trees,i have nothing against the trees but come on $70,000 you have got to be kidding. If the trees are a danger to people cut them down cause if one falls and kills then $70,000 will be a drop in the ocean when the council is sued.

A way of binding all the large branches in a hoop to each at the right height like a barrel hoop will make each large overhanging branch safer on the one tree. Then extending this to the entire set of trees so that any load is shared by all the trees as a system. It is an easy thing to change the load by one quarter by proving a systematic way of load sharing supports. Changing a disconnected set of high risk items to a composite load sharing system. All is possible -the cost is another matter. This set of trees may be worth it?

Well they did not spend that on reworking our garbage system. Those that want the trees retained should pay for the consultation.

Eventually all these trees will have to get the chainsaw because no tree lives for ever. The trick is to start the selective removal and replacement with other species so that when the last fig is removed the replacement trees will already be well advanced. This will avoid the moonscape appearance if all the figs were removed at once.
