Abuse yelled at female referee at Cessnock game

06 Jul, 2009 09:14 AM
NEWCASTLE Rugby League boss Stephen Fleming said action would be taken following an ugly incident at Cessnock Sportsground where a spectator yelled "we're going to rape you" to touch judge Julie Young.

The incident happened in the second half of Saturday's match when Cessnock defeated Central Charlestown 32-12.

Ms Young is the sister of former Newcastle Knight Mick Young, who was playing for Central.

"I heard the people on the sideline harassing Julie and I went over to see if she was all right," Mr Young said.

"I heard one bloke say 'we're going to rape you' and after the game she was telling me they were saying 'you're not going to leave this ground alive'. That is just insane.

"Even if it wasn't my sister, no girl should have to cop that at work.

"She was just doing her job, and she didn't even make a mistake.

"There were 200 drunk blokes on the hill and there wasn't even one security guard to be seen.

"Julie has been an official for eight or nine years and she's got thick skin and doesn't take too much to heart, but this was just beyond a joke."

Cessnock secretary David Cleaves said the club would do everything possible to make sure this was a one-off incident.

"We certainly don't condone that sort of behaviour," Mr Cleaves said.

"If someone can help us identify the person responsible we will make sure he never walks into Cessnock Sportsground again. If that is what was said, we would like to apologise to Julie profusely."

Mr Fleming has launched an investigation into the incident.

"This is definitely not acceptable and we will have to have a look at what happened," Mr Fleming said.

"We have asked for a report from both clubs and we will act on those reports.

"Getting the clubs to have their own security guards is something that we will have to look seriously at."

Mr Fleming said the league had tried to avoid appointing Ms Young to Central matches but a recent change in administration had led to the mistake.

Ms Young did not return calls from The Herald yesterday.

The incident occurred when referee Shane Smith stopped play mid-way through the second half because he thought he heard Ms Young say that a Cessnock winger had knocked on.

When Ms Young said that was not the case, the rules obliged Mr Smith to pack a scrum with a Central feed because they had the territorial advantage.

Cessnock skipper Ryan Gregory was sent to the sin-bin for comments he made to Mr Smith over the incident, and the Cessnock supporters started shouting at the officials.

Well truly, would you expect anything less in Cessnock?

This threatening behaviour is typical of the rugby league fan. Community leaders must act now to shut down this dangerous game.

Where do you start on this? Firstly, the scum who said this should be dealt with harshly. It defies belief that such rednecks still exist. Imagine if you were to say this to the redneck's mother, sister or daughter? This incident just proves that society will never change while people like this are still allowed to roam the earth.

why are women not ususlly selected & her appointment for this game was a "mistake" isnt that discrimination! The disgusting drunk yobs are the ones who are outve place not Ms Young!!!! Stop condoning and accomodating gross behaviour!! What about responsible service of alcohol? where is that being implemented at these games?? sure get security, but get a brain first.

Whilst not condoning the actions of this dim witted supporter I feel that the referee in this instance caused the dramas on the day. I am not biased I do love a game of rugby league when it is decided by the best team on the day. For so many years Cessnock sides have copped rotten decisions when playing Newcasles big guns such as Wests. Congradulations Julie on the great job that you are doing. with a referee that has a backbone.

Utter disgrace. I hope this man is found and is no longer allowed in to any Rugby Leage ground in Australia. This behaviour is deplorable. Even drinking can not be used as any type of excuse for yelling that type of stuff to an official. Get back to the old days when the things you yelled to officials was things about them being blind or having their eyes painted on.

Why won't I be surprised when the culprit isn't found? Whenever I used to go to games at Cessnock, the smell of marijuana on the hill would start at about halftime of third grade and the beer consumption would rapidly increase from then on.

That's disgusting that a young lady putting her hand up to support the game had to tolerate that sort of thing. I've seen another female official, Jayde Parrey, be taunted by the crowed and even have things thrown at her simply because she's a woman. Management need to set an example by sticking up for these women and severely punishing any offenders. If they rely on these women having "thick skin", they're perpetuating the myth that it's OK for the crowd to act that way.

That's the culture of the bogan game for you and it will never change because bogans will always exist...

Doesn't the sport have enough problems at the moment with relations with women in league as it is? Disgusting act and I hope those chickens get banned. No woman should be subjected to that
