Activist Erin Brockovich talks about Orica

17 Aug, 2011 06:24 AM
Stockton residents have every right to be concerned about the health impacts of last week's hexavalent chromium leak, US-based environmental activist Erin Brockovich said.

Listen to Newcastle Herald environment reporter Matt Kelly's interview with Erin Brockovich.

Ms Brockovich said she had hoped to attend community meetings this week but was unable to, however she hoped to visit Stockton within the next two months.

"I can't believe we are still dealing with this chemical. I feel very frustrated," Ms Brockovich said.

What exactly is the objective here...to shut orica down? Or is it about getting compensation, stockton residents?

not again herald, is there no other news to report?, didnt they they just arrest some mad man alleged to have strapped a bomb to a girl? Could we perhaps change the front page now. There is going to be an inquiry (where more than likely they will show orica followed correct protocol in reporting the incident). Let it go, let justice follow course , all your doing now is scaring gullible people. Come back laman st figs, all is forgiven

There must be protocols in place tied to the running of the Orica plant on the island. They are an industrial giant in the manufacture of chemicals and explosives. There must be inductions for employees who come to work there. There used to be incident books and I see no reason why they are not still used to assist with the review and upgrading of safe work practice. Have a look at Botany and the damage done down their to the community ground water by Big Industry down there!

What's next? She goes to Boolaroo to visit the old residents who lived next to the smelters for years? Or does she drive 15 minutes up the road to Williamtown to see those who choose to live next to the RAAF base and airport? This is starting to border on the ridiculous.

Just reading the comments on here really scares me.

This IS a serious issue. I'm sure you would think so if you lived in Stockton.

Many people's health was put at risk because of unclear information from authorities.

We're yet to see the health impacts of this.....

I have a relative who works over there and all the employees from the night in question have been tested and NOT ONE single person has tested positive NOT ONE, in fact NO traces were found and if you are going to talk about "raining down" they surely would show traces more so than people living a couple of KM's away. This has turned into nothing more than A) people wanting compensation for nothing and B) political pointscoring.

This woman is a lot more welcome than Robyn Parker.

I reckon Orica should be shut down and Stockton residents compensated. I believe the negative comments here are very suspect indeed.
