AGL halts planned exploration near Gloucester

08 Dec, 2011 03:27 PM
GAS explorer AGL has agreed to stop planned exploration drilling at a site south of Gloucester.

The proposed drilling was halted by a residents’ blockade that started on Monday.

In a move just announced, AGL said it would halt the exploration at the site until a hydrological study of its approved operations was completed and the results made public.

The company said it would also wait for a legal challenege to its approved operations to be resolved before work started again.

AGL planned to drill six exploration wells on land owned by coal company Gloucester Resources until the blockade halted operations earlier this week.

The company has approval for 110 gas production wells in the Gloucester area.

'In a move just announced, AGL said it would halt the exploration at the site until a hydrological study of its approved operations was completed and the results made public" Hang on, that almost sounds like AGL already know what their consultants reports & results of Hydrological studies will indicate?

If AGL want to assure the community about very real & serious environmental & aquifer concerns. perhaps a truely independent study should be undertaken or at least give the community as stakeholders the time to have the hydrological documents rigorously analysed?

This is just a ploy.

AGL is a power retailer and cannot afford bad publicity in the current competitive market.

To be fair all work should cease until after the full investigation of CSG by the Federal Govt instigated by the Independents.

This beautiful Vale of Gloucester should continue to produce food as it has always done.

GSG should never be exploritorily mined without decent studies undertaken prior to commencement! International CSG history leads to much reflection on the liability to lands & peoples...

Nothing but a study conducted by absolutely independent consultants, appointed by the Government, and in consultation with community groups, would be adequate. Paid for by AGL of course.

We have already had a taste of what AGL's consultants can come up with in the form of the 1728 page EA floated for the original application.

The greatest risk to the Gloucester district is the loss of dairy farms being subdivided into small acreages so a monster house can be built, a garage as big as a normal house for the 4WD's and boats, lawns to be mown as well as grazing a few old usless hay burners. The loss of a few acres of land for drill holes is very minor in comparrison.

These exploration companies need to realise that the community is totally sick of copping it.

If they want to drill and explore AGL and other companies need to respect the communities wishes.

The Licenses were issued by the previous labor Government through State Planning, A Royal Commission should be held into the operations of State Planning under the previous government to see what the circumstances of licence issue were. No reflection on the companies. To the people manning the barricades you have our total support.
