All of Hunter's ALP members could go

21 Jun, 2010 04:00 AM
ALL five of the Hunter's state ALP members could lose their seats next year if the 25 per cent swing in Saturday's Penrith byelection is repeated at the March 2010 general election.

Minister for the Hunter Jodi McKay has the second smallest margin of any Labor member in NSW, holding the Newcastle electorate by just 1.2 per cent of the two-party preferred vote.

Maitland's Frank Terenzini has a 2 per cent margin, followed by Charlestown's Matthew Morris on 7 per cent, Swansea's Robert Coombs on 10.8 per cent, Cessnock's Kerry Hickey on 12.4 per cent and Wallsend's Sonia Hornery on 15.8 per cent.

Liberal MP Craig Baumann holds Port Stephens by 0.09 per cent, while Independent Greg Piper holds Lake Macquarie by 0.14 per cent. Both are tipped to increase their majorities.

Even a swing half the size of Saturday's would wipe out all of Labor's Hunter MPs except Ms Hornery.

I very much doubt that the 25.5% swing away from Labor will be repeated in a general State election but there will be a large swing away from Labor right across the board, I would suspect and rightly so. No doubt any seat below a 15% margin will be fair game.

Well the results from the Penrith by-election should wake a few Labour members from their four year slumber and maybe we should see some action in the Hunter region.

If only this were true. However I'm afraid that Newcastle and The Hunter will continue to vote for for the ALP like the blind sheep they are.

The sad thing is that Barry O'Farrell and his wannabes have nothing - no policies, no solutions - nada. A great alternative to the pathetic pack of morons that are there now - I think not. The only reason the three parties have the reigns is because we let them. Vote No to a political party - if you do vote for the ALP, the Libs or the Greens Party then it is your fault

I can't believe how little was in the budget for the Newcastle & Hunter region/s...Hardly a budget to show the voters in this region that they "are on to it' and getting things done!! we missed out on some badly needed projects being finally underway and funded, no fair about mentioning new trains and buses either, we might have jobs BUILDING them up here....but apart from the private bus companies and SYDNEY STATE TRANSIT BUSES, getting the benifits... Newcastle STATE TRANSIT gets nothing, even with more elderly and ageing passengers, NEW TRAINS?...Central Coast/ Sydney use only....NONE for Newcastle, GLENDALE interchange?...STILL a vision and nothing more!!..i don't think much of the Libs either because all they ever want to do whilst in power is slash and burn services like public transport, remember Greiner and Baird anyone??....oh, and by the way Jodi, i am looking at your BIG GLOSSY BROCHURE from your LAST election campaign...you know the one?..on one side it's got, BROADMEADOW STATION UPGRADE UNDERWAY!!, complete with sketch of 3 lifts, walkways, etc, looks VERY IMPRESSIVE!!...PITY it was NEVER BUILT.

Sonia and Kerry should stay as they speak out for a better place.

Sonia Hornery is the most deserving of defeat. Her failure to secure the Glendale Transport Interchange is more than enough reason to get rid of her.

A 25% swing is a huge margin and is very unlikely to be replicated. Nevertheless it is obviously time for the ALP to change from within or be further marginalized.
