Angry residents protest in Charlestown over public housing plans

18 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
SIMMERING rage over public housing in the Hunter boiled over yesterday when about 70 people gathered for a protest in Charlestown.

Residents fighting public housing plans at Charlestown, Teralba, Tighes Hill, Swansea, Tingira Heights and Throsby Creek attended.

They were expecting to meet NSW Housing Minister David Borger, but he cancelled.

Instead Charlestown MP Matthew Morris and the Department of Housing Northern NSW general manager Pauline McKenzie were left to respond.

Residents were angry the NSW Government had allowed the department to bypass councils and "self-approve" public housing, under a Federal plan to stimulate the economy.

Charlestown Residents Group spokesman Phillip Regent said residents' rights had been ignored.

"The department has bulldozed its way through the system and we're not going to put up with it," he said.

A three-storey public housing plan on two blocks in Charlestown Road has 20 units and four car parking spaces.

Peter Mundy, whose backyard will adjoin the project, said it would ruin his lifestyle.

Lake Macquarie City councillor Barry Johnston said the plan showed "complete disregard" for council planning guidelines.

Jeane Brown, who has lived in Charlestown Road for 68 years, said the project's driveway would be next to her bedroom.

"I'll have no privacy and no sunlight," she said.

Ms McKenzie urged residents to submit concerns to the department within the 21-day exhibition period, which ends in five days.

Residents fear their complaints will be ignored, but Mr Morris said he would urge the department to redesign the project.

The nearby residents have every right to protest over this development. Public housing or not, its plain stupid to have so many units on such a small piece of land and only 4 car parking spaces is moronic planning at its best.

Nimbys are at it again.Unfortunately in this world we don't live in private bubbles. Homelessness is not a joke and ALL Newcastles community should be helping to house, women children, families, elderly and those with disabilities.Shame on all those communities that are protesting against this assistance. Try and see lifes changes as enriching and leave all the pettiness for the politicians.

You lot are a disgrace and must live very sheltered lives. There are homeless people right across the Newcastle/Hunter and you clearly don't give a damn. If you did, you would not object to a housing development. Further more, the way you carried on when the cameras were in your faces anyone would have thought you were public housing tenants, ranting and raving like a bunch of lunatics. Who the hell are you to tar and feather everyone with the same brush? Do you really think all public housing tenants are the same? We purchased a duplex a few years ago and its extremely close to a public housing area here in Raymond Terrace and I can honestly say we've had no dramas at all! Pull your bloody heads in and start giving everyone a fair go. Keep talking down public housing tenants and before you know it you'll have nothing to show for years of hard work because the courts will take it all from you in a mass defamation case! And there is a case for defamation there. Don't talk and look down at people, your no better than anyone else in society so stop putting yourselves above everyone else.

What a bunch of NIMBYS. People have to live somewhere . You own your own properties but not what's next door to you, the rest of the street or the view. If you can't cope with it then sell up and move out.

Mr David Borger please explain why you cancelled the planned meeting. The Department of Housings actions in self approving and constructing these units is disgraceful.

"Peter Mundy, whose backyard will adjoin the project, said it would ruin his lifestyle". So Mr Mundy; your lifestyle is one that excludes reality ? Do people that cannot afford "your" lifestyle deserve to have a roof over their heads, or shoved off into the bush so that the likes of you can pretend that your lifestyle, (no matter how materialistic & pathetic) is what everyone strives for in life ? I have news for you sir, for some hard working low income earners, public housing is the best thing they can strive for since they may not have been afforded the opportunity to obtain your lifestyle. Get grip mate......

These residents I seen on NBN news last night are the most biassed I have ever encountered. You are all heartless and clearly don't give a damn about the homeless people across Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. So many people have been waiting for many years for somewhere to live, they get the opportunity to live in something thats going to be brand new and you lot want to deprive them of that? Hang your heads in shame the lot of you. You are self centred and have no heart for those who are homeless and not through their own fault. Did you ever stop to think that the units being proposed are for elderly people? It could be a family member of yours that needs somewhere to live or perhaps someone you know who knows of someone else thats homeless and needs a roof over their head but do you care? Hell no! Your more worried about rubbishing housing tenants and catergorising people. I always thought this country was about giving everyone a fair go. I always assumed that being an Australian meant being a caring citizen and respecting others instead of judging. All you people did was put people down in not so many words. Be very ashamed of yourselves and please don't say your Australian!

When I watched NBN's evening news last night I could have sworn these residents were public housing tenants because of the way they were carrying on, up in peoples faces shouting abuse. That was until I listened a more closely and realised they were property owners. Yes some housing tenants can be nasty but so can everyone in society. It doesn't matter where you live, its about the individual but you people didn't talk as though everyone is an individual, you put housing tenants under one umbrella and thats defamatory. I don't know how the hell you people can sleep at night. For those of you who do? When you get into a nice warm bed on a freezing cold night, try and spare a thought for those who are on the streets with no heating, no blankets and no hot meals because they have nowhere to live. How dare you judge people on where they live or have to live. Have you stopped to think that these people can't afford to buy a comfy home? Have you stopped to think they can't pay rent in the private sector because its too damn expensive? I bet none of you have because the world evolves around you and you only! Your a disgrace to this town which already has a reputation for being selfish.

My wife and I live in government housing and I can honestly say I was offended by the story on last nights news. We are both hard workers but on part time wages we can't afford to buy a nice house or pay rent in the private market because its too expensive. We maintain our government home as if it were our own. We've done the work to this house ie, painting, new flooring, new bench tops and landscaped gardens. Not all govy tenants are bad. We're in Raymond Terrace and it has a large population of housing tenants but not all of us are out there committing a crime or harrassing our neighbours or drug dealers. Believe it or not we are normal people living in subsidised housing because we can't afford to pay market rent or a mortgage. What gives you the right to judge others? I was always taught that God was our judge and we aren't to judge anyone. The residents in Charlestown did and its totally unfair. This is a democratic society but I seen no democracy last night. What I did see were people who are quite happy to put others down and put themselves above others. Your not above me and i'm not above you. We're all human and we all have feelings. Geez grow up and stop being judgemental
