MOST people are attached to their hair literally and figuratively, but when one puts so much effort into its upkeep, parting with it can be more than a little traumatic.
Macquarie Hills man Beau Parker is calling for support as he prepares to shed his 30-centimetre mohawk, which he has sported for two years, for Kidney Health Australia.
The punk-rock fan said his mohawk took about 20 minutes to set with regular hairspray.
"It's red now but it has been many colours over the years," he said.
Mr Parker's father, Tony, died from kidney problems last December and, in a bid to help others affected by kidney-related illness, the 23-year-old will shave his head to raise money.
"My dad was a retired barber and I got him to shave the mohawk for me," Mr Parker said.
Shaving his mohawk in September would mean he would no longer stand out in a crowd and might disappoint most of his friends, but the cause was worth it.
"They are happy it is going because of a good cause," Mr Parker said.
"One of my friends has always hated it and said he would pay anything for me to shave it so hopefully he will donate a fair bit."
