Appeal begins into proposed mosque

23 Feb, 2012 01:28 PM
ELERMORE Vale residents spoke with NSW Land and Environment Court commissioner Sue Morris this morning before a formal hearing began on the controversial mosque proposed for the suburb.

The Newcastle Muslim Association has amended plans for the mosque rejected by the Joint Regional Planning Panel last year.

The association is appealing the decision.

A delegation from the court toured the Croudace Road site this morning and spoke with six neighbours and objectors to the proposed $6.8 million development.

The formal appeal has begun and continues this afternoon.

May common sense prevail, and the NMA's proposal be once again rejected on the grounds of totally unsuitable site.

Muslim culture and religion doesn't fit in with Australian society and it should be rejected on those grounds alone, pure and simple.

I can't believe the Islamophobia. As a non-Muslim I am all for diversity and multiculturalism. Let the Muslims have their mosque. There are plenty of Australians who are Muslims.

Great to see that the anti Mosque residents are happy to identify themselves as bigots.

@the truth - excuse me? Why shouldn't they be allowed a place to worship and do whatever it is Muslims do? I lived in Sydney for many years where places of worship for many different nationalities are all around the suburbs. They did no harm to anyone. But I expect nothing less of comments like yours from typical narrow minded Novocastrians. No wonder Newcastle is a dive!!!!!! This place will NEVER go forward because of the people....

Strooth, it’s not about Islamophobia. It’s about a development that is totally in the wrong place bringing more traffic congestion to an already over congested suburban street.
