Ask and ye shall cruise, says Hunter MP

Ask and ye shall cruise, says Hunter MP

08 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
ASK and Newcastle City Council would receive funds to investigate the viability of a new cruise ship terminal at Queens Wharf, Minister for Hunter Jodi McKay said yesterday.

The minister has thrown her full support behind the push for a terminal.

She said a possible partnership between public and private sectors could be needed to get it over the line.

Money to complete a feasibility study on building the terminal at or near the Queens Wharf site was guaranteed, Ms McKay said.

A dedicated cruise terminal at the site would further cement Newcastle's position as the state's second cruising city.

"We know the Queens Wharf site is the only one that can accommodate ships of these sizes," Ms McKay said.

"But council would have to look at ongoing maintenance costs of an ageing site like that.

"There is strength in a possible private and public sector partnership model and a convention centre at the site could be something the private sector come back with."

A Herald poll shows that 79.1 per cent are in favour of a terminal at Queens Wharf with 20.9 per cent against.

Councillor Aaron Buman will ask fellow Newcastle councillors at the February 16 meeting to approach the State Government for money to finish the study.

Tenders for the State Government-funded $2.5 million temporary cruise ship Channel Berth would be put to tender soon, Ms McKay said.

The State Government announced in September that it was spending the money refurbishing the berth, near Dyke Point.

From September, P&O Cruises will become the first cruise company to base a ship in the city when the Pacific Sun operates out of the Port of Newcastle.

Having passengers and about 700 crew embark and disembark in the city for at least 14 voyages is expected to result in a $6 million economic benefit.

Hey Jodi, is there an election coming up?

All talk no action! Another feasibility study? 700 crew and passengers, $6 million economic benefit. Where are they going to shop?

I understand that a feasibility study for this site has already been done. IT HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE. No more studies

Lets spend some real funds on real projects that will move the Newcastle LGA forward. How about seed funding for a fare paid tourist express train daily from Sydney to Newcastle Station? (that would give close to 1/2million tourist per year or about $40m tourism dollars. All this from almost no capital investment) Or what about a major sporting and entertainment complex at Wallsend Or what about a "Statue of Liberty"

Don't think you will get the statue Bigfeller, But havn't we had enough of the studies and investigations into just what Ncle can or can not support. Just get on with the job and fix Newcastle once and for all. The CBD is an eye sore, just do it.

Why should the council have to ask for the funds? How about a bit of proactive forethought and have the state government take the lead on the project for a change. NCC will take forever to have final resolution on the matter, arguing over petty differences in the process.

Mr. Buman, you are always going on about the wasting of Tax Payers funds. Why on earth would you want to scrap a very successful 'community owned' space, a present for our Bi-Centenary. I can't see why the old tug mooring site,(in front of Customs House) which hasn't had anything tied up to it for ages wouldn't be a more approprite site. Passengers alighting or boarding the Cruise Ships, would be able to get on or off our Newcastle Rail Service directly returning to or from home. Just because the pro developers aka Fix Our City want this prime piece of Real Estate for their use, it doesn't mean you have to be so enthusiastic about it.

Didn't Jodi support the Carrington Cruise Terminal last month? What has changed her mind? Election coming?
Posted by Proud Novocastrian, 8/02/2010 11:01:43 AM, on The Herald
While you are asking Jodi how about the Bogey Hole, Tourle St Bridge , Four lane road to Airport, finish the By pass road past John Hunter to Jesmond and Shortland to Sandgate? Unless you have to support spending our money in Sydney.

Proud Novocatrian has a point, the Minister for NSW (short for Nowhere outside Sydney or West of) had full support for the Carrington cruise terminal last month. Nuh, elections early next year don't have anything do with changing her mind - OH LOOK a "flock" of flying pigs just flew past!
