 Bar for Newcastle's Royal

Bar for Newcastle's Royal

12 Jul, 2010 04:00 AM
Commercial components of one of Newcastle's newest multimillion-dollar developments are taking shape, with a delicatessen/restaurant and small bar proposed for The Royal.

The delicatessen and licensed restaurant is the latest application before Newcastle City Council for a ground-floor tenancy in the $190 million complex opposite Newcastle Beach.

It would open from 7am to 10pm Sunday to Thursday, and until 11pm on Friday and Saturday, for up to 120 people.

Parties will put their views to councillors tomorrow.

The plan's public exhibition attracted two supporting submissions and 17 objections about use, noise and residents' privacy.

Also facing councillors is a decision on an application for a bar in another ground-floor commercial space.

Staff recommend it be approved, but have suggested conditions on security, noise, patrons and operating hours.

These include having security guards and cameras, closing doors and banning al fresco dining after 10pm, and not playing live, amplified music.

The conditions also confirm operating hours and patron capacity.

The bar would accommodate up to 194 people and trade until midnight from Monday to Saturday and 10pm on Sundays.

A public voice session was held on June 8.

Supporters said it would add to Newcastle's economy and social scene, while objectors said it would create violence on streets, and urged the council to put a moratorium on new licensed premises.

Newcastle NEEDS this type of bar for those of us who don't wear Supre and go to Fanny's. Those of you who oppose it need to move to the suburbs, you are holding Newcastle back. Bars like this are for people who want to enjoy a night out with friends, talking etc, not getting completely wasted and throwing up all over the place.

What proof do these objectors have that it will increase violence. If people move to the city, they must expect there will be noise. Noise should not be any reason to hold up approval from an inner city venue.

Lets hope its a milkbar. 194 patrons sounds like a lot of milkshakes to me.

"objectors said it would create violence on streets"..... . Talk about a fear campaign. Newcastle is a joke.

Let's just wait and listen to the inner city wowsers and nimbys scream about this. The same lot who complained about having the World Cup screened at Wheeler Place, the same lot who complained about the new nightclub at the Kensington, the same lot who want the pubs shut at "Big Dog's Bedtime", the same lot who want the South Newcastle Beach skate park closed, the same lot who want the younger residents of Newcastle moved on from the Foreshore after 10pm. Do I go on !!!! If we want Newcastle to progress, even to keep existing, we need to move on. If you move into the city then you should expect to live with noise, people, cars and everything else that goes with living in a living, breathing modern city, or move to Salt ash/Williamtown and listen to the sounds of freedom.. Shut these bl**dy whingers up.

I propose we put a skate park on the ground floor of this development. It could be used during any weather conditions and is close to public transport. Win-win for the entire community.
