Batmobile back to patrol our streets

Batmobile back to patrol our streets

25 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
THE mean streets of Buff Point have been crying out for a hero, the kind who will step out from the shadows and, well, maybe pick up some groceries on the way home.

Perhaps with that in mind, Mark Kemp, 49, has built his own Batmobile.

"It definitely draws attention," he said.

"I've only got to park it for people to start gathering round."

The hot-rod is more a tribute to TV Batman Adam West's ride of the '60s than Christian Bale's movie in the noughties.

It's mounted on the chassis of a 1970 VG Valiant convertible with holy Jeremy Clarkson, Batman a V8 engine.

Every detail from the bat alloy wheels to the bat-ear rear indicators and the growling exhaust were beaten into shape over two years in Mr Kemp's garage.

There's even a bat phone, though a hands-free kit might be a legal requirement for calls to Alfred.

The car is insured for $75,000, and was partly funded by the sale of Mr Kemp's last project a replica of the Ford Interceptor driven by Mad Max.

"My wife Sandra and 16-year-old daughter Amy-May are pretty well over me being in the garage," Mr Kemp said.

"Actually, I'd like to thank them for their patience."

Which might be tested again soon.

"My next plan is to build a Batboat. Then I could take it to car shows, towed on the back of the Batmobile," he said.

What a shame Old School Body Works at Warnes Bay weren’t mentioned for their hard work bringing the body work upto standard and for the detail in the paint work done on the bat mobile.

Holy Henry Ford Batman! The sacrelidge using a Chrysler to make a Batmobile. The real Batmobile was built using a Lincoln(FORD) Futura prototype,so therefore making a Batmobile out of a anything but a Ford product is wrong. I hope when he built his Mad Max Interceptor he used a XB Falcon.

Well murphy_51 as a matter of fact my custom Ford ute had trim, panel & paint work done by a shop. Also some mechanical was done by a mechinic due to a lack of shed at the time but the rest is all my work.I am currently time poor due to other commitments that I havn't been able to complete my long term project a small classic Ford but rest assured I will be a majority of the work myself. I don't want to knock Mark's work, this Batmobile looks ok but I would have chosen a Ford to be more authentic to the original.

I agree with Murphy_51 but I do drive a Ford and I appreciate all the hard work that goes into building streetmachines/showcars, give Mark a bit of credit he has spent 3 years of his life creating his dream car and I'm sure he has heaps of friends and other shops who he has to THANK, lets not forget that you don't always get to read what was actually said in the interviews (editors have the final say) So GOOD on you Mark and all the other car builders out there it gives me something to look at and admire.

Marke Kemp has done it again, First he built the first street legal replica Mad Max Interceptor and now the first Batmobile on the roads in the Hunter/Central Coast. Regardless if he used a Chrysler, Toyota, Ford or any other base car, bottom line HE DID IT.!! Its a bit hard to find a Lincoln or Edsel for that matter to be used as a base car here in the Hunter, so my hats off to Marke to have the vision irrespective of what is hidden under the Bat Wings. Credit also to the Hunter Panel/ Spray shop for taking on something different and making it a reality and a showpiece. Basically, credit where credit is due, Top Points for Marke and anyone else that helped make a vision become a reality.
