Bodhi Festival a spirited revival for David Jones building

04 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THE next chapter for the David Jones building in Newcastle will be more spiritual than commercial.

Later this month the abandoned building will host the Bodhi Festival for three days from February 24.

Each floor of the former department store will host yoga and meditation classes, 70 stallholders, musicians and spiritual healers from around the world.

‘‘The fact that we are turning the space into a spiritual department store is not lost on us,’’ Sydney yoga teacher Erik Denison joked yesterday.

Mr Denison works for Shanti Mission – a co-organiser of the festival and one of the first spiritual schools to participate in the Newcastle Now initiative – which aims to create a health, wellness and arts district in the CBD.

The associated group known as The Peace Angels, who dress in angel costumes and carry white lanterns, will help launch the festival with a walk down Hunter Street from 11am on Tuesday.

Window displays of angels and Bodhi trees will be put in the empty David Jones store the same day.

David Jones ended its lease in Hunter Street Mall last January.

Great to see the old DJ's spot being used. To keep the momentum going, how about opening it up as a Farmers & produce Market?

The infrastructure is all there, loading bay, behind the scenes access, parking etc. Imagine the amount of people it would bring in?

Would it be that hard to do? I can't think of any reason against it.

Rossco.....you dont think there is already an oversupply of markets in Newcastle? With the Farmers Markets at Broadmeadow, Olive Tree Markets and several other Arts and Craft Markets on a weekly basis....Do you think think it would survive? How could it be any different?

Why not redevelop the DJ'd building for the Regional Art Gallery. Then we could demolish the concrete box in Laman Street. Or move the Library there. There is plenty of parking. Why not? This councils into recycling isn't it.

Another building that has been added to the list of CBD's derelicts since last year, raising the cost for city's maintenance, renovation works. Without a tenant or an owner, I believe it will turn to an eye sore, will be added to the list for demolition. As it may be difficut to rent or sell the building, it may be easier to rent each floor. While there is supply shortage in residential and commercial units, Newcastle CBD can't make use of its available resources, turns them to cost items. Floors can be rented by companies, banks; the building can be an hospital, school or an hotel.

Is this article about the building OR the Festival . . .

Folks, lets all go and have a look at this Festival - at least then we can see what they have to offer . . . I suggest it must be pretty good if they are offering entry by "heartfelt" donation - now that sounds like they're pretty confidant in their product.
