Bus driver averts tragedy as wheels fall off

09 Feb, 2010 09:46 AM
A BUS driver has averted a possible tragedy when he was able to safely stop his vehicle which had lost its rear left wheels with 80 school children on board near Raymond Terrace yesterday, police say.

The driver was taking Irrawang High School students to Medowie when the wheels careered off the Hunter Valley Bus Company vehicle just before he was to begin a sweeping left hand turn near Finnan Park.

Police said the bus's axles began to dig into the roadway as one of the tyres flew into Grahamstown Dam and the other careered into bush.

The bus driver was able to drop back gears and safely bring the vehicle to a stop in the middle of Richardson Road.

No one was injured.

"I believe that the driver used great skill in keeping the bus from losing control,'' acting Sergeant David Hanna said.

"With 80 school children on board, I hate to think what could have happened.''

The roadway was closed for two hours and all children were taken home on other buses.

Police have reported the incident to the Roads and Traffic Authority's heavy vehicle inspectors and have issued the vehicle with a defect label.

takes me back many years to when the same thing happened to a Sid Fogg bus taking us home to Stockton from Newcastle Girls High & Hunter High, driving down Fullerton Road when we noticed a wheel rolling on the road besides us, then realised it was off our bus, that driver also bought the bus safely to a stop beside the Hunter River

All commercial vehicles should have a pre-use inspection schedule that the operator performs before taking control of the vehicle on his shift, and sign for that vehicles safety. that way defects can be detected and repaired.

I keep hearing that song (Lucille) in my head;..you picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel,..80 young children..and a grip on the wheel,..you picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel.

How did changing down gears slow the bus when it had no rear wheels on one side? Why did the brakes not work? How did the axle dig into the roadway? (and if the axle came out of the vehicle then the gears would not work.)

Why were there 80 kids on the bus? It is ridiculous that there were so many. Normally between 45-55 seats???? Just happy my daughter and all the kids on the bus got safely home.

We all seen the studs and they were not broken or badly damaged which means the wheel nuts were not tightened properly. When I start work driving a fork lift the first thing I do is check it the forklift is in a safe working condition. Train and bus drivers are often taking vehicles into service which are not fit / safe on roads and tracks which are not a 100%

Bigfeller, Why are you asking so many questions. The children are alive and that's the main thing. I

Bigfeller how about just saying well done to the bus driver instead of questioning the guys honesty.
