Call for action on Hunter brothels

Call for action on Hunter brothels

19 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
AN inner Newcastle residents' group has called on the Government and police to do more to curb illegal prostitution in the Hunter Region.

The Islington Action Group was instrumental in the crackdown on street prostitution on the Maitland Road, Islington strip last year.

The Herald reported yesterday that some legal brothel owners and welfare workers believe the crackdown has led former street prostitutes to work from private rooms.

Some believe illegal brothels out-number legal establishments by a ratio of four to one.

Islington Action Group spokesman Geoff Curtis said further work was needed to curb illegal prostitution in the area.

"We have the same issue with home prostitution as we do with street prostitution. The authorities really need to crack down on them," he said.

"We suspect most of the girls who are doing home prostitution have gone though programs that have resulted in them getting a house or their own premises."

He estimated the number of street prostitutes working on Maitland Road had dropped from about 40 at the start of last year to about 10 now.

Newcastle city command duty officer Inspector Jim McArthur said police would continue to be proactive on the issue of illegal prostitution.

"We respond to all information that is brought to our attention and we are grateful when members of the public contact us," he said.

"In addition there are regular patrols conducted over at the strip. Obviously we don't flag them. We do them when it is appropriate."

if anyone was running any other backyard, cash in hand business"the tax office, centrelink and council officers would be all over it in a flash. why should these businesses be treated any differently? a point to note is that your taxes are most likely providing them with unemployment benefits, whilst they are paying no taxes and collecting money from their cash in hand activities. This issue, as well as the dubious health aspects noted in previous herald reports, means these shonky businesses have to be shut down. There are plenty of legal brothels looking for workers. islington residents would also rather that police did not refer to maitland road as "the strip". islington residents and businesses are fighting to reclaim their inner city suburb for themselves, their children, and all visitors to the suburb. the govt, police and council need to continue to work pro-actively to remove this unsavoury and unhealthy activity from outside peoples homes. the also need to be pro-active about shutting down back yard businesses of all types.

I'd propose that a community funded co-operative be established to accommodate the 'illegal workers'. The co-op could establish and manage a facility to allow members to provide their services in a safe and regulated environment in return for a nominal rental fee. Lets be proactive and stop pretending this issue will vanish into thin air.

What are these "Programs" that Mr Curtis and his associates "suspect" that "the girls" have gone through that result in them getting a house??? What is he talking about??

I wasn't surprised by the ignorance that was displayed by our compliance officer from Newcasltle council in yesturdays paper relating to this article. It is not hard to see that there is a huge illegal prostitution business booming when you read the classifieds and see that the private ads far outweigh the legal ads. Therefore I can assume that council is quite happy to pretend this is not a problem. I think council would find that most of these businesses would be operating in residential areas where there are children either living on premises or next to, which is against councils compliance. This business impacts the public safety as most of these operators fail to adhere to the practice of safe sex which has lead to an outbreak of gonorrhoea in Newcastle. I think council should pick up their phone and call a few of these numbers and organise to meet these workers as a client so that they can check out the compliance!! These operators defraued the taxpayer of thousands of dollars each year.

Geoff Curtis stop infantilising these women by referring to them as girls. They are grown ups and make their own decisions.

Here Here Nick! Again with the prostitution.... There are much more pressing issues than sex workers! If Geoff is going to target home based workers now, what's next for the Islington Action Group? Are they going to try and stop another community service from moving to the area (Samaritans)?

your tax payer dollar has funded a social worker $90k / annum to help get these "women" off the streets, off drugs, into housing and back into "society"..... good luck with that i reckon.

Research has shown that the average home sexworker sees about 4 to 5 clients a day so if 4 to 5 clients a day goes discreetly into home a day and it doesn't affect anyone , whether they are having their toe nails cut , finger nails pedicured or whatever . Big business is trying to take-over what is a one -to -one business arrangement People only take notice when the word ''sex '' is mentioned Maybe they are a little jealous because thay have such a poor sex lives themselves . If any business is making a nuisance they should be stopped by the current laws and the word sex should not be even mentioned Just because 4 to 5 people go discreetly into a home per day which is often less than the amount of family members going into a home per day and cause no trouble why worry about their activies which go on behind doors . Is is much better that street soliciting. With the internet many people meet each other for sexual purposes for free , should this activity also be stopped or should sex altogether be stopped and them we could go back to the Victorian era .

To reply to unclebarrys comments about a community funded co-operative be established. There already is unclebarry, it's called a legal brothel and the only reason these workers don't want to work in such establishments, is because they would have to adhere to the regulations such as regular health checks and pay a fee for working on a premises that gaurantees their safety as well as the communities, oh and i forgot to mention they would have to declare their earnings and pay tax. But why should they do this when its so easy to do what they are doing? maybe we should all start renting out a room in our homes and running our own cash in the hand business!!!

Well Treetop maybe you need to get your head out of the treetops and get into the real world. I agree that on average they would be seeing aprox 4 to 5 clients a day. This would earn them a nice comfortable living of aprox $500 p/d. These people are also putting their hand out for centrelink benefits which in turn affects you and I the taxpayer! Or worse still they are supporting drug dealers, how do you feel about drugs treetops is that harmless to? I know a few workers that work private and support a couple of drug dealers living in nice homes on merewhether beach. Pity i can't afford to do that, maybe i must be doing something wrong! oh sorry its called obeying the law.
