Cessnock council needs a "reality check", court told

22 Jul, 2009 04:00 AM
AN asbestos expert told the Land and Environment Court yesterday there was "no evidence of wholesale dumping" on land at Sawyers Gully owned by Cessnock councillor Allan McCudden's company Quintaz.

Occupational hygienist Dr Jim Orr gave evidence during the second day of hearing in a case brought by the Cessnock City Council against the councillor.

Dr Orr said the council needed a "reality check" and the amount of asbestos found was minimal.

The court had been told Cr McCudden was the sole director of Quintaz, which ran a number of businesses, including asbestos removal and demolition services.

The court has reserved its decision.

the amount of asbestos was minimal according to the expert but my question is should there have been any asbestos dumped anywhere?

Most of the houses and buildings built in the 1980's and before contain enormous amounts of asbestos. Hardiplank on the outside walls, in some roofing, and around the hot water plumbing all contain asbestos. We will be living with it for centuries.

I am led to believe that it is only dangerous to a person/s when it is being cut up,ie asbestos dust,is this true,as the place i rent has fibro walls and asbestos roofing but i was told it is ok if left alone and would not be a health risk.

Saw a guy looking like he was up to no good as i drove by a sharp bend heading toward Kitchener a few weeks ago. Lo & behold a pile of what looks very much like asbestos wrapped roughly in a cheap blue tarp is now laying there. Im getting tired of spendin my time reporting this kind of activity. The bushland around Awaba is full of illegal asbestos dumps too.

Asbestos should be free to dump at local tips if contained properly. This may go some of the way to alleviate illegal dumping. Yes it is true if you don't drill or cut it and it is sealed i.e painted it won't cause a problem. Unfortunately over time it breaks down and becomes brittle. I have seen old buildings in Newcastle with badly decaying asbestos. They should be condemned on health grounds. In the seventies mechanics de-dusted brake drums with compressed air and builders cut sheets with power tools all were oblivious to the danger. Hardies knew, Car Companies knew, Governments knew and nobody told the workers. I have had two relatives and one friend die from asbestos and one relative battling it now. None have sought to go through the legal minefield to seek compensation in their remaining years. Compensation should be automatic on diagnosis with the Government and Manufacturers footing the bill. One relative was a NSW fireman for over twenty years inhaling fumes & asbestos dust, even the union don't want to know. They should all hang their heads in shame. It is a terrible pain full death virtually suffocating for the final years of life.

I had a relative do the right thing follow protocol, ring and arrange thru LMCC the disposal of asbestos at the tip. Is it true that it all just gets dumped together in land fill anyway?
