Cessnock councillor wants MP out

04 Jun, 2010 04:00 AM
CESSNOCK Greens councillor James Ryan has told member for Cessnock Kerry Hickey to put up or shut up over the council's planning debacle and has called for his resignation.

Councillors will be asked at a meeting next Wednesday night to back Cr Ryan, who said Mr Hickey should resign on the grounds that he was politically motivated and unable to have an objective view on issues relating to the council.

The Herald reported last month that Planning Minister Tony Kelly wrote to the council, demanding that it show cause why its planning powers should not be removed after he revealed it was the most complained about council in NSW.

Mr Hickey says he is receiving up to eight complaints a day about the council's planning department.

He said he has written to councillors and arranged mediation between the council's general manager, Bernie Mortomore, and developers but to no avail.

"I had no alternative but to go to the Minister," he said.

"Cr Ryan continues to make politics out of this when he should be doing what he is paid for and that's to run the council."

Cr Ryan said yesterday that Mr Hickey had not tried to establish whether complaints he passed onto Mr Kelly could be justified or had substance.

"Of 10 letters [of complaint] to Kerry Hickey from residents, which the Planning Minister has cited as reasons for taking action, four are not primarily complaints about council," Cr Ryan said.

He said in one case - which involved a dispute between neighbours over a right of way, and where the Ombudsman's office found the council had acted carefully and reasonably - Mr Hickey and Mr Kelly still claimed the council was at fault.

Cr Ryan said Mr Hickey had said for some time that he wanted all complaints about the council to go to him, and that Labor insiders said he has been asking for complaints at branch meetings.

A bit early to take the gloves off gentlemen. The State Elections are not for another nine months.

Perhaps James Ryan should tender his resignation - the Greens Party play politics with local government and it is the one area of government where the politics is not needed - it is the coalface of government so we need people that can do things rather the games - I think someone told the Greens Party people like James Ryan and Michael Osborne that they are important - they should both cut the rot and do something for the community instead of themselves.

It is interesting that Cr Ryan claims that Hickey's motivation is politically motivated yet the Herald does not report that Cr Ryan has already indicated he will stand for the state seat at the next election. Is Cr Ryan on the defensive purely to for his own political reasons?

March 2011 can't come soon enough. Will the Labor Party be as arrogant after they lose Cessnock seat AGAIN?

What a nest of vipers! Here you have an ex-local government minister who couldn't make it into Joe Tripodi's puppet (Keneally) government meddling with an ex-clique of ALP Cessnock councillors to discredit the new guys. Caught in the Hickey headlights are the council's professional staff as new Minister Kelly throws his weight around Macquarie Street. Cr Ryan is right to try and bring some order and respect to CCC who are faced with all the early pressure demands of spillover development from greater Sydney. Other Hunter councils should be defending CCC in this struggle.

Hickey, the saviour of the coalfields. He fixed the Abermain to Neath section of Maitland Rd, he stopped his mate Della-Bosca from closing the emergency dept at Kurri Kurri Hospital, he has just finished fixing a section of the John Renshaw Drive and calls his mate Kelly to fix the once labor dominant Cessnock council over a few furphies. When will the people of the coalfields take off their labor glasses off and take a good look at what their missing out on? Good on you Mr Ryan, we need more like you in council who are prepared to stand up to Labor bullies!

Pity Hickey wasn't made a Minister before he loses his seat next year. A defeated backbencher only gets $80,000 a year lifetime parliamentary pension.
