Chaos as fire shuts down Newcastle city streets

01 Jul, 2009 12:05 AM
INNER-CITY Newcastle was covered in a thick blanket of smoke late last night after fire broke out in a derelict building.

Firefighters were called to Hunter Street about 11pm after reports of a fire in one of the abandoned buildings behind Newcastle City Hall.

The fire, believed to have started in the roof cavity, caused extensive damage to the two-storey building.

Firefighters battled the flames for almost an hour to stop them spreading to nearby properties.

Smoke covered most of Hunter and King streets and drifted to nearby Civic Park.

It also caused traffic chaos as dozens of motorists slowed down or stopped to see the fire.

"We came out and the entire street had just about disappeared," one resident said.

"You could hear all the fire engines and stuff going past and then it was crazy down Hunter Street."

It is believed no one was hurt during the fire.

The cause of the fire was still being investigated last night.

Most of inner-city Newcastle consists of abandoned and derelict buildings. There is no need for a train service to this ghost town as nobody needs to go there. Hunter people have moved on to better places such as Maitland, Port Stephens and Lake Macquarie. It is only the severely delusional that consider Newcastle the capital of the Hunter.

I think this is a NCC building. Hope it was insured so the site can be totally cleared.

Thanks Jim for your negative perception of life in Newcastle.

Jim, people live in Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and Maitland because they are so close to Newcastle and all it's education, health, sport, recreation, entertainment and commerce facilities.

Jim, you are a very, very bitter man. Fortunately, your comments or opinions don't mean a hell of a lot anyway. If there is no need for a train service, why are you always complaining that it is being taken away? Strange cat.

Traffic chaos at 11pm. You have to be kidding. There is barely any traffic in the City during the day, let alone late at night.
