Christ Church Cathedral painting 'inappropriate'

29 May, 2010 07:19 PM
DEAN of Newcastle the Very Reverend Dr James Rigney has closed a three-panel artwork hanging in Christ Church Cathedral depicting naked boys being beckoned by St Nicholas, deeming it "inappropriate".

Dr Rigney closed the painting, which hangs in the St Nicholas Chapel and depicts St Nicholas's three miracles, last week.

He will consult parishioners tomorrow on the move and the painting's future place in the cathedral.

The triptych, by John Montefiore, is hinged, allowing the outer panels to be closed inward on the main panel.

It has hung in the Anglican cathedral for 30 years and was painted in consultation with the 12th Dean of Newcastle Robert Beal to honour notable Newcastle resident Lester Saddington, OBE.

The central panel shows the miracle of the pickled boys, when St Nicholas, the patron saint of children, resurrected boys who had been killed and pickled for human consumption. It also shows male genitalia.

Dr Rigney said he closed the artwork because he thought it was inappropriate to display an image of that kind in light of revelations of child abuse by members of churches in the Hunter.

"We are in a different place [to when it was painted] and we need to think if it reflects how we feel today," he said.

Gabrielle Beal, daughter of the late Robert Beal who oversaw the composition and installation of the piece in the late 1970s, said the "censorship" was without merit.

"The painting was closed off without proper consultation," Ms Beal said.

"The fact is it was done with reference to biblical texts in consultation with my father."

The painting was not visible during the Feast of the Senses art exhibition last weekend. Postcards with a photograph of the painting were on sale at the Cathedral gift shop yesterday.

Parishioners will have the opportunity to hear Dr Rigney's reasons at services at 7am, 8am and 9.30am tomorrow.

It might be a great piece of artwork, but it is in the wrong place. Images like this have NO place behind an altar. It does NOTHING to enhance the worship of God and should not have placed there in the first place!

This is ridiculous! Art is art and its been there for thirty years. Paedophilia is a serious issue for the Catholic Church and that is where the Church needs to focus. Does he think this is affirmative action against the creeps in his Church, or that this artwork has inspired them to offend?

It really is time for the church to shut up shop. Its relevance to modern day life has long passed.

It is interesting to reflect on the historical record that Queen Victoria insisted legs be covered including chair and table legs. So it seems what others think may occur in the minds of the masses will have a direct effect on what we are permitted to see. The imputation being, what might people who view the work of art think! Perhaps it would be better if the church instead of closing the triptych, resolved instead to close the cell door on all those who have preyed on children?

This is ecclesiastical political correctness gone completely mad! Is there a scrap of evidence that over the 30 years that the mural has hung in the cathedral, it has caused any problems? Have clergy had to call the police to remove nests of lurking paedophiles ogliing the artwork ( I suppose that would have to include lay as well as clerical paedophiles)? I was going to donate a Bill Henson photograph but in light of this nonsense,I've now changed my mind.

If this was Bill Henson's Gallery and not a Church, would there of been Police involvement. It appears all too often that the Church is exempt from Police Investigations and they are allowed to conduct their own investigations.

this artwork must be now making the church feel awkward

Imagine if the Church of the Renaissance period( that had commissioned most of the great Masters works) had banned Michaelangelo's full bodied figures, genitals and all, from chapels and churches! Makes you wonder!
