Circus Avalon defies gravity at Wallsend Winter Carnivale

08 Aug, 2009 05:00 AM
PERFORMERS' death-defying aerial acts are set to wow crowds this weekend, but what is amazing Circus Avalon about its Wallsend Winter Carnivale gig is the event's great community spirit.

The Newcastle-based troupe is among acts featuring in the suburb's annual day out tomorrow. More than 50 community groups and 50 businesses will host 80 stalls, live entertainment, youth activities, rides, heritage attractions and art and car displays.

Wallsend town co-ordinator Kathie Heyman said the suburb would pause tomorrow to celebrate what was "best about living in the west".

Circus Avalon has spent the past few days putting the final touches to its performance.

Artistic director John Campbell said a group of about 30 performers ranging from amateurs to professionals and aged from four to 35 would display circus skills such as trapeze, unicycling and juggling.

"It's a very community-oriented place, Wallsend, and the festival shows that," he said..
