Club will 'bring back life' to CBD

04 Sep, 2010 05:00 AM

The Kensington nightclub in Newcastle’s inner city will lodge its second bid for a licence next week with the backing of Hunter Business Chamber as part of the CBD renewal push.

Licensee Dane Crawford will lodge a formal application with the Casino Gaming and Liquor Control Authority to transfer the former Jolly Roger Nite Spot’s licence to the new Hunter Street venue.

‘‘Meetings we’ve had with police and the Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing have been positive,’’ Mr Crawford said.

‘‘We’ve spoken to a lot of stakeholders during the 30-day community consultation period, and we’ve had a lot of support from individuals and organisations including the business chamber.

‘‘I think our application this time around is far more comprehensive, and people understand that our proposal will help bring life back to the inner city.’’

The Casino Gaming and Liquor Control Authority rejected the first licence transfer from the Jolly Roger to the Kensington in June, saying the venue would be ‘‘detrimental to the well-being of the local or broader community’’ and late-night and early morning trading would have a ‘‘negative social impact’’ on residents.

The new application adheres to existing inner-city licensed venue trading restrictions including 1am lock-outs and bans on shots and strong-mixed drinks after 1am.

Hunter Business Chamber chief executive Peter Shinnick said the Kensington was a chamber member and the venue’s proposal for a ‘‘luxurious, elegant, upmarket, chic venue fitted out to the highest standards’’ should be supported.

‘‘It’s the only business I know of that’s trying to open in the inner city at the moment and showing confidence in the future of the CBD,’’ he said.
