 Coal and autism link study

Coal and autism link study

12 Jun, 2010 04:00 AM
EMISSIONS from Hunter power stations will be central to a study proposed by Melbourne researchers who are investigating the relationship between mercury and autism.

The study would build on recent US research highlighting a potential link between industrial mercury emissions and high autism rates. The National Pollution Inventory shows coal-fired power stations produce about 30 per cent of mercury emissions. Meanwhile, autism levels have soared in recent decades.

In 1983 the number of Australian children diagnosed with autism was one in 20,000. Today the number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, including autism, is one in 160.

Researcher David Austin from Swinburne University of Technology said the Hunter's air quality was of interest to researchers.

"The Hunter's air quality is a major population health issue," he said.

"More research needs to be done into mercury emissions to properly understand its potential health impacts."

Associate Professor Austin said researchers were applying for government funds for the project.

"Unless there is enough political will it's difficult to get these sorts of projects up," he said.

The study has the backing of the NSW Greens.

"The Keneally government is pushing for yet more coal-fired power stations, including a 2000 megawatt plant at Bayswater," Greens MP John Kaye said.

"The Keneally government's Hunter health study overlooked autism as a possible consequence of the massive amounts of coal being burnt in the region."

"At the very least, a moratorium on new coal-fired power stations should be imposed until the evidence is better understood."

what ever happened to the "precautionary principal"?!

There are no more autistic children being born now than in the past, just more 'medical' people finding problems which require expensive treatments. The green jokers would rather we all sat around in damp dark caves and only went out occasionally to pick berries and eat grubs.

I would be interested in that study!! My son has Autism and my husband works in mining!!!! It might Finally give us some answers....... One has to wonder why Newcastle has one of the highest rate of autism in Australia.

How do you get mercury from burning coal ?

Autism "rates" haven't soared, Autism diagnoses have! 10 years ago, very few doctors could make the diagnosis, a lot less parents could. Now they can and it's only natural that the number would go up. Recent US research has not highlighted any link, quite the opposite. Mercury was removed from vaccines and the diagnoses continue to rise. A LOT of studies have proven to show there is no link. If they do this "study", I hope they do the exact same study in other areas without the coal plants and compare. I would venture a guess that the increase in autism "rates" in both areas are similar.

Don't think that's a very golden blog Goldie! Obviously haven't experienced autism - you would be one of the judgemental folk out there who just don't understand. These are alarming statistics and should be explored.

I am a physician that has been reseraching this issue. The evidence that autism numbers have increased over the past decade, and that this increase is not just due to better diagnosis is overwhelming. There is not sufficient space to list that evidence here, but consider that at any given moment in time the standards for diagnosing autism in young chiildren and in adults is the same, But the incidence of autism in adults is significantly less than it is in children. Reserachers have anayzed the data on the increase and have found that while some of the increase in autism is certainly due to better diagnosis or changed criteria the majority of the increase is due to an actual increase in autism numbers. This is vitally improtant because epidemics always have a major environmental component. There are over a dozen studies that purport to show no link between autism and mercury (thimerosal) or autism and the MMR vaccine. The vast majority of these studies are either fraudulanet or highly suspect. An example: Thomas Verstraeten" s original CDC study showed a clear link between mercury and ASDs, the CDC suppressed that study and had Verstraeten rewrite it to show no association.
