Coalition damned on Tillegra denial

16 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
THE NSW Opposition has denied weekend reports that it will can the Tillegra Dam project if it is elected.

Upper Hunter MP George Souris said the Coalition was still waiting to see if the State Government approved the Tillegra dam.

"A planning decision is expected on the DA in April, under Part 3A," he said.

"If we reach 2011 and there's no decision or contracts signed, we will consider our position and announce that before the election in March."

But Mr Souris said a coalition government would not axe the project if it meant paying hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation to private contractors.

"If binding contracts have been signed and they are compensatory then there's unlikely to be further policy," he said.

"We are not about to pay $500 million to not have a dam."

The Hunter Business Chamber came out strongly in support of building the dam yesterday, saying industry and residents needed assured water supplies.

"Another Hunter Water report shows that we need to boost our water supplies and Tillegra dam is the stand-out option," chamber president Brett Derwin said.

"It also shows that impacts, inevitable with any significant piece of infrastructure, can be minimised."

Spokeswoman for the No Tillegra Dam group Sally Corbett said Mr Souris, Liberal MLC Robyn Parker and Liberal MP Craig Baumann had all made speeches in parliament criticising the dam.

Greens MLC John Kaye said it was time for the Opposition to state its position clearly.

"It is outrageous for them to sit on the fence and refuse to take a position on an ongoing issue in the Hunter," he said.

"They have allowed the community to believe they are opposed to the dam but when the chips are down they run away.

"The citizens of the Hunter are looking for leadership."

The report quoted as Tillegra is the stand out option is the opinion of Hunter Water who are in the business of selling the stuff. All other Government departments are saying this is a bad project so Mr Derwin should read the other Government reports and then give us his learned opinion.

Tillegra Dam is now an election issue. There are vulnerable Labor seats waiting to be taken - and maybe its time for the HBC to get behind its prawn and fishing industry instead of its mate Kevin Young. Learn your facts about the damage this dam will do and support local businesses which will be affected if this dam goes ahead.

How could we ever have believed that a politician would put their neck on the line in taking a hard-line stance against the Tillegra Dam proposal? It's typical, spineless, political non-commitment that we should've come to expect in this country. Shame on the Hunter Business Chamber for supporting the proposal too. Where is the chamber's support for the few remaining farmers who are putting this prime agricultural land to its most potential? A word to the NSW State Government, scrap the dam and support our farmers!!

Hunter Business Chamber seems to be chanelling Kevin Young. But it's OK for Business Chamber stalwarts, that is property developers - they don't have to pay for the dam. It's us the mug punters who will be paying. Seems like the Libs/Nats haven't woken up to this yet.

A bob each way will win you an election? O'Farrell did his party no favours. As for the Hunter Business Chamber, its self-interest is at least always worn on its sleeve for all to see. Its favoured projects are not always ones in the best interest of the community as a whole it could be noted. Funny how facts get quickly turned around when it suits the government and its supporters. The Hunter regional plan did not support the need for a new dam for population growth. Hunter Water did not support a new dam, but it turned when the government told it to. Note how our local place of academia remains silent on the issue. Note that Hunter Water strongly assists that learned institution. Powerful interests seemingly dependent on government largess would appear to be lining up like a row of skittles. Remember what people power can do!!

their silence is a silent approval, that simple.

Why would Souris want to can the dam when the water is needed for the power stations that are a major industry in his electorate. No water no power stations no votes!

Why should contracts be signed when it has not been approved. This makes a mockery of the whole "approval process"!

"The Hunter Business Chamber came out strongly in support of building the dam yesterday, saying industry and residents needed assured water supplies." Stop using residents as an excuse and primary payment option. We all know this "proposed"dam is for the industry.
