 Conmen hit Lake Macquarie

Conmen hit Lake Macquarie

17 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
UNLICENSED conmen have been reported trawling parts of Lake Macquarie and asking residents for painting and other work, prompting a warning from NSW Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts.

The government established a Travelling Conmen Taskforce last year that has been tracking gangs of itinerant workers, mainly from Ireland, who advertise for roof painting and other trades work.

The taskforce has received recent reports about men looking for work in the Valentine, Eleebana and Warners Bay area.

In recent months, men with Irish accents have been reported to the taskforce offering roof repair, cleaning and work on bitumen driveways at Kilaben Bay and Toronto.

A number of Irish itinerants have been charged recently in Sydney for providing building work unlicensed.

Tradespeople must be qualified and licensed, but consumers have no protection if they deal with unlicensed people who come knocking on doors or cold call asking for work.

"These people are in organised gangs and use similar signage, business cards and invoices," Mr Roberts said.

"If you do engage someone to do trade work at your home, never pay with cash or a cash cheque."

Residents are advised to refuse unsolicited offers of work, shop around for quotes and to only use licensed tradespeople who provide written quotes.

People should be suspicious of offers for cheap deals.

Surely it can't be that hard to track these guys down. Why not photograph them with your phone camera (perhaps without them knowing so they don't get violent) and provide the image to the police.

This article sparked an annoyance in me. What is the real objective here perhaps more to the point it's never pay up front, let them in your house or give them money to purchase materials wanted. My mother is aged and lives at Buff Point it was approximately 12 months ago when a man appeared from nowhere and asked her if she had any work to be done . Cautiously my mother asked for a card he said he didn't have one, she asked where is your car he answered "I'm staying at a friends and I got dropped off". The man identified a hand rail that needed painting. Basically with my mothers offer to purchase the paint and no phone number to contact this person an arrangement was made for the following Saturday. Where there is no instant financial gratification they simply keep moving. Naturally he disappeared as quick as he appeared. These individuals are not unlicensed trades people they are simply opportunists with a sharply trained cunning called professional thieves.

As kids we'd be out there knocking on doors looking for odd jobs and that was the beginnings of a life in construction proud of every job I've done, it's the Aussie way to start on Ur own two feet from the bottom up it's a shame these mugs cause problems for the rest of us who strive for quality at the grass roots level not dialing the nearest national office.
