Councillors push for show holiday

04 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
NEWCASTLE Labor and Greens councillors have signed a rescission motion aimed at making Newcastle Show Day a public holiday.

Councillors Sharon Claydon, Nuatali Nelmes, Tim Crakanthorp and Michael Osborne want to reverse the council’s decision to ask the NSW Government to make the show holiday a ‘‘local event day’’.

A public holiday carries public holiday pay rates and the local event day does not.

Business groups have long campaigned to scrap the show public holiday, saying it is detrimental to the local economy and costs businesses money.

While Newcastle City Council agreed to a local event day, Lake Macquarie City Council voted in support of a public holiday.

NSW Finance and Services Minister Greg Pearce will ultimately decide whether to approve a public holiday or local event day, and it is unlikely he will approve different holidays in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.

Cr Nuatali Nelmes said no one knew what was going to happen.

‘‘These public holidays are hard-fought and once you lose them, you never get them back,’’ Cr Nelmes said.

The motion tabled said having a public holiday would provide consistency with adjoining councils ‘‘and will have positive social impacts on the 21,386 families with children living in the Newcastle [local government area] as it allows them to attend the show together without affecting their income’’.

Abolishing the public holiday would affect workers, families and the community.

Show Day will be held on Friday, March16

The resolution must include a call to other organisations to request a public holiday.

Many other LGA's have a race day as the holiday

There is plenty of time on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday for families that want to go to the show to do so. Plus there is the flexability of a 38hr RDO as well for those that desperately want to go on the Friday.

There are plenty of workers who live in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie who have never been entitled to a show day holiday nor ever received one.

If we want to go to the show as a family we either go after we finish work or on the weekend.

Sounds like this is just a push for those who want to work on Friday 16th March to be paid double time & a half.

The Councillors should be pushing for us all, not just the lucky few.

This is Labor and the Greens pandering to the trade unions - this does nothing for workers in this town except make us have to pay childcare fees for the day - which are bloody expensive. We cop this at the federal level and now at a local level - for what? for the pleasure of the unions - start acting for all Australians

the SHOW is an opportunity to display local product and has traditionally had a public holiday for school children and workers to attend. Employers should not begrudge this day, as the show benefits the whole community. Put it down as part of the community contribution and stop counting every bean. Happy workers are an asset and good bosses are gold.

FORGET IT!

If the show is on a weekend, use that day instead.

Show Holidays are granted in less than 30 of the 150 LGA's in NSW. Often they are only for half a day when the show is a big thing in the town and it is on a weekday. The show is much less relevent in Newcastle then it is in those handful of LGA's that do have it off.

What is wrong with going to the "SHOW" on the weekend!!

It is just another excuse for a long weekend, where people of newcastle to go away for the weekend.

Where is the thought for small business! Expected to pay staff extra money to open the door or closed for the day. Both a loss. Not to mention the 5 public holiday we already have in april !!

What about Maitland

They have nothing greater to do than rescind that? How about getting on with some actual business of Council? Like allocating resources on the ground right now to beautify Civic Park, once the trees are removed. Rebuilding/replanting will take a while, but the terraces and the Airforce memorial grove deserve some TLC right away.
