Council's 13th Laman Street fig tree vote

01 Dec, 2011 05:30 AM
NEWCASTLE councillors are crunching numbers before another showdown vote on the Laman Street figs tonight – and the outcome is far from certain.

Newcastle City Council will resume an extraordinary meeting, for the fifth time, in an attempt to consider Premier Barry O’Farrell’s offer to provide an arborist to do a risk review of the trees.

The council can lawfully vote to stop the chainsaws, after a three-month moratorium on that decision expired on November 25.

Tonight’s decision will be the council’s 13th vote on the fig trees’ future.

Behind-the-scenes discussions are under way, and the numbers in the council chamber are evenly poised.

Cr Tim Crakanthorp, who would vote for an independent assessment, is expected to be absent because of work.

His Labor colleagues will push another risk assessment and for the council to ask the RTA to close Laman Street as a public road.

Greens councillor Michael Osborne has said he will try to revive previously abandoned talks on an independent risk assessment.

On the other side of the chamber, councillors who initially voted to remove the trees have privately discussed whether to back the assessment.

At least three councillors say they will not change their votes.

I'd hate to be the councillor who tries to get re-elected after chopping these figs down AND failing to rejuvenate Hunter street after so many years. Good luck Buman King Sharpe and Cook. You'll all need it in your next careers.

Perhaps the Herald editor would be good enough to disclose the names of the NCC councillors letting their egos frustrate community opinion so that these non-representatives may be discarded from NCC at the 2012 elections.

Save the Laman Street figs and sack Newcastle City Council NOW!!

The Herald could do their readers a great favour by not covering this topic ever again.

Tonight NCC has an opportunity to turn this debacle around.

Openness and transparency of process will finally be possible.

Will they behave like adults this time?

Can they be the mature, respectful, elected representatives of our Community that we require them to be?

This is no longer just about some beautiful, majestic trees half way through their life.

It's about how NCC is being run by Admin instead of the people we voted for to do the job.

Close that part of Laman Street to vehicular traffic.Pop some signs up warning people to not shelter under trees in storms. This would alter the insurance criteria immensely. Sort that.

Take down those horrid fences.

Extend Civic Park.Put in some more park benches.Call it an ANZAC Memorial walk if you like (if it helps you get some State Funding.)Get on with fixing the rest of Newcastle that you've allowed to fall into disrepair using Laman Street as a convenient (but nonsensical) excuse.By the way, why the empty fenced rectangle in car park behind Art Gallery? To kill small businesses?

It's long overdue for the State government to intervene and direct Council to obtain a final truly independent assessment. They could of course be waiting for the sad predictable turmoil to announce the cutting of the rail. As Norm once said "never let a chance go by" - their gain, Newcastle's loss

A MESSAGE TO ALL COUNCILLORS;

Please DO NOT let this vote go as far as letting the mayor have the casting vote.

If you do, I doubt that any of you will ever hold public office in this town again.
