Death reignites Myall River dredging debate

23 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
A HAWKS Nest group has called for an urgent Myall River dredge following the death of Grant ‘‘Squid’’ Forster in the area this week.

Myall River Action Group members said the 29-year-old’s death highlighted the dangers of the area between Winda Woppa and Corrie Island, where his body was discovered on Monday.

Water Police are examining the circumstances of the death.

Long-time Tea Gardens resident and group member Dave Glynn said the area had become a minefield for navigators since it lost the ability to clear into the bay after rain.

He held concerns for skippers visiting at Easter.

‘‘It’s a maze of sandbars made invisible by the filthy water that can’t get into the bay,’’ Mr Glynn said.

The Newcastle Herald had previously reported the Myall River group had been lobbying to have the river dredged for about four years.

Port Stephens MP Craig Baumann expressed his condolences over Mr Forster’s death but said it was premature to speculate on whether the dredging issue had any links.

He said he was working closely with Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson and Environment Minister Robyn Parker to ‘‘work out how we’re going to get this dredging done’’.

‘‘This is the top priority on my agenda for Port Stephens,’’ he said.

I'm sure there's no need for 'consultation' to take place. Dredging used to take place routinely, and it's only money saving measures that put a stop to it.

We've got fish with ulcerations, people hitting sandbars - why not just get on with it?

I will tell you how to get it done, call a tender for a dredge. What a comment, "work out how to get it done". I am so sick and tired of politicians these days, there are none that are proactive. Where is the Federal member on this and how much would it cost?

WHy has the tragic death of this young man been brought into the political arena? If the politics continues, it is an admission of guilt and the family of the unfortunate young man should sue for every penny they can get.

Councils seem to have forgotten that they are there to serve the ratepayers. State Governments are so intent on penny pinching that they place lives at risk.

to the observer, the family particularly ask the media not to make this tragedy a political issue regarding the dredging and blame no one for the accident. These men travel the river regularly and knew the dangers, we will wait until the investigations are finished to know what happened that evening. I hope everyone resepts their wishes and doesn't bring politics and legal issues into this tragic event.
