Debate rises on sea levels as McCloy brings in experts

28 Jan, 2012 04:00 AM
BELMONT businessman Jeff McCloy is taking the rising sea debate to another level with three scientific experts to deliver their findings to Lake Macquarie residents.

The millionaire developer has organised professors Ian Plimer, David Archibald and Robert Carter to address a free information night on climate change at Belmont 16 Footers on Tuesday.

Debate has raged for many years over rising sea levels in the Lake Macquarie area and the council adopted a climate change policy last year that restricted certain developments by the lake and ocean.

Mr McCloy said he would mount a class action against the Lake Macquarie City Council for reducing the value of properties in the area as a result of the policy.

Legal action is still an option, but the next step is the information session with University of Adelaide's Mr Plimer, Perth-based scientist Mr Archibald and Mr Carter from the Marine and Geophysical laboratory at James Cook University.

"I don't believe the community fully understands the impacts of this policy. The ramifications are enormous," Mr McCloy said.

"Some people will be prevented from building extensions or face such a cost impost it will not be viable, while others will be prevented from building anything at all.

"There are numerous experts around Australia and the world who are questioning the science used to assess the key criteria for large-scale sea level rises.

"In fact, there is research that suggests rises in sea levels are decelerating."

Lake Macquarie mayor Greg Piper said the council had simply adopted the same climate change policy that was being used by state and federal governments.

"Jeff is unashamedly a climate change sceptic and he won't be swayed, but he expects other people will be swayed by him," Cr Piper said.

"I think it's good that a minority view is heard, but I've listened to Ian Plimer on television and radio and I've read his book, which frankly I wouldn't pay for.

"But I am willing to listen to them all if I can make it along to the information session."

"I think it's good that a minority view is heard, but I've listened to Ian Plimer on television and radio and I've read his book, which frankly I wouldn't pay for."

This is not the type of comment that I would expect to hear from a Civic Leader. Mr. Piper should use Governor-General Quentin Bryce as his role-model.

At the same time, Mr. Piper may wish to explain why he and his Council GM feel the need to unfairly pump up staff numbers in the environmental area and slug the ratepayers mercilessly for this action, which we regard as folly.

What is there to hide?

Ha ha ha Plimer, who refuses to have his climate papers peer reviewed. David Archibald, who I consider the author of possibly the worst climate science paper ever. Money well spent, Jeff.

All these so called present day experts will be dead when climate change doesn't happen in the future. The climate always changes otherwise you would have a climate. It would be just a straight daily occurrence followed by a dark period, How boring would this life be. We couldn't blame the weather for floods and heatwaves. Life would become simply boring.

While everyone is entitled to their opinion, the fact that Jeff McCloy is a developer naturally means he has a vested interest in picking three scientists who happen to be climate change skeptics, out of the thousands of scientists worldwide who agree that climate change science is real. Three scientists do not make a consensus.

In my opinion Ian Plimer is a sad joke. His views have the equivalent mental nourishment of a 100% fast food diet i.e., all rubbish!

if the sea level is rising, how is it then that depths of the lake are getting lower?

you go to any bay inside lake macquarie and nearly all are lower in depth than it was 20 years ago, the only exception is Swan Bay at Marks Point, this is because it was dredged for the sand, if this bay had not been dredged you would be able to walk to the channel without your feet getting wet. Edmonds Bay used to be deep, now it is lucky to have 12 inches depth at low tide. If anything the water is lower, not gettinat higher. Look at Belmont Bay. It has lost at least 1 metre.

Go for it Jeff. Not often I agree with a developer, but common sense is on your side.

Some people confuse their position in power as a position of knowledge. Especially when the public purse is paying.

If anyone in council bothers to look at the scientific data they will see that sea level has been falling for a couple of years now (Envisat & Jason satellite data). Furthermore world temperature has been flat for well over a decade. This has not been explained by Mr Combet - for good reason, as the CAGW favouring scientists *have* no explanation. When they can explain (which other scientists such as Prof Carter can) then the LMCC might be justified wasting our money on climate change stuff in their bloated unsustainable Sustainability Department. I won't hold my CO2 containing breath.

Every time a car engine is started it is the same as turning on a heater with noxious gasses coming out of it. Times that by millions and that is just one damaging problem, without including Industrial pollution. Man has really caused damage to our once clean atmosphere and you would have to be out of touch with reality if you did not believe in climate change caused by man. Go and start your car and hold your hand over the tailpipe and feel the heat then smell your hand. Oh and do the same to your other car as well.
