Denise Gold to take on Sydney Fringe Festival

03 Sep, 2010 05:00 AM
NEWCASTLE singer and comedian Lauren O’ Brien aka Ms Denise Gold is about to ruffle some feathers at the Sydney Fringe Festival.

Mostly the feathers will be Denise’s own from her large collection of boas.

Nonetheless she did write on her application form that she was unforgettable because she ‘‘looks like a blow-up doll and sexually harasses the audience, who come back for more’’.

What’s more, ‘‘Denise’’ recently met her favourite man, Bert Newton, and made quite an impression on the Australian showbiz industry legend.

‘‘I was clinging to him like a barnacle on a ship,’’ O’Brien joked.

‘‘I must have been pathetic because he tenderly grabbed my face a couple of times and just planted big kisses on my cheek as if to say, ‘you really are a poor simple woman’.’’

Ladies and Gentlemen ... Ms Denise Gold will be performed by O’Brien at The Seymour Centre, Sydney, on Monday, September 13, and Friday, September 17.

Denise Gold was developed from an Oz Council grant through LiveSites in 2004.

The character grew up in the Coalfields of Abermain, is a former Miss Newcastle Showgirl 1985 (runner-up) and is extremely open about her many romances and the Australian soap operas that almost called her back. She sings, she dances and is often found with her long-suffering personal assistant Cherry Holden, played by Yetta Abrahams.

‘‘We decided Denise was nearly famous and lived blissfully unaware that she was too old, too plump and too loud and her assistant was the ‘keep it all together’ person,’’ O’Brien said of developing Denise.

These days O’Brien performs mostly solo, although her partner, Damian Welbourne, is never far from the spotlight.

Welbourne is the spotlight operator at the Denise Gold shows. He sometimes is worked into the show as the ‘‘head of safety, Flash Barry’’, who is conveniently mute.

Cherry and Flash are joining Denise for the Sydney Fringe gigs.

In the meantime, Novocastrians can catch a peak of Denise at her monthly gig at the Kent Hotel, Hamilton, on Monday night. The show begins at 7.30pm and tickets are $20 at the door.
