 Developer to appeal over Huntlee

Developer to appeal over Huntlee

03 Aug, 2011 04:00 AM
The developer behind the state's biggest proposed housing development, Huntlee, said it would appeal against the court decision that threatened to derail its plans.

LWP Property Group said it would appeal against last month's Land and Environment court decision to quash the rezoning of the land near Branxton where it wants to build the region's first new town for 50 years.

The court overturned the project's state significant site status, declared under the former Labor government.

Managing director Danny Murphy said the appeal was based on strong legal advice.

At the same time, Friends of Huntlee group has launched an online petition to gather support for the development.

The company has also sought a meeting with NSW Planning Minister Brad Hazzard.

Friends of Huntlee spokesman Mick Starkey said Sweetwater Action Group, which challenged Huntlee in court, was a small but vocal group.

"They are blocking a much-needed development that will provide affordable, well-designed homes, social infrastructure, employment and business opportunities," Mr Starkey said.

Sweetwater Action Group president Chris Parker said it had received feedback that indicated it had strong support in the community, especially from those who lived nearby.

"I don't know what the [Friends of Huntlee] hopes to achieve," Mr Parker said.

"The appeals hearing will probably be more to do legal proceedings than outside influences.

"All along we as a group have been campaigning more on social and environmental things, unfortunately it's points of law that carry more weight."

One word "Greed!" Just got to love these land developers. They couldn't care less about the damage they do, not only to the land but to the current community that's lived there for decades in peace & quiet, yet what they do care about is making millions. Pity about the great majority of locals who don't want it, but that's nothing new for anyone living in the Cessnock Council region. People have a go at Newcastle Council, over the Laman St fig tree debacle - well Newcastle Council managers are armatures compared to their incompetent & useless counterparts working in Vincent Street Cessnock.

So how much is this latest action going to cost Cessnock Council? Pour yet more money into legal fees when they cant even afford to fix the roads!

At what point will ratepayers demand their DCPs and LEPs be given legal standing which blocks the land and environment court from abusing local communities? Edward James

Nothing new can enter in Newcastle area, in the Hunter region when there are full of people who oppose to anything new. They are happy with 1970s; they aren't even aware that we are already in 21st century.

Oh no........ a big bad developer wanting to build a new community with affordable housing and doing a lot more than most to protect the regions environment along the way. I have an idea, why don't we just wait until the government builds some new housing for us all, good development in the right location! GO hard Huntlee we welcome you.
